The power of medicine has two aspects: taste, potency, and essence. It is said to be divided into general and specific. First, potency is explained in three aspects: power, strength, and qualities. Potency has eight types: heavy, oily, cool, and dull, as well as light, rough, hot, and sharp. The first four eliminate wind and bile, while the latter four eliminate phlegm. Light, rough, and cool generate wind, while hot, sharp, and oily generate bile. Heavy, oily, cool, and dull generate phlegm. Qualities are completely essential and possess the characteristics of potency, so they are called 'power.' From the strength of the snow mountain piercer, the sun and moon, coolness and warmth are outstanding, so it is called 'strength.' Among them, heat eliminates cold diseases, and coolness eliminates hot diseases. Qualities include smooth, heavy, warm, oily, and stable, cold, dull, cool, soft, easy, and dry, astringent, hot, light, sharp, rough, and mobile. Seventeen characteristics destroy twenty qualities. Therefore, it is called 'qualities.' These mostly arise from taste, because taste relies on earth and so on. Heavy, oily, and so on arise from it. Salty, sour, astringent, and sweet are respectively heavy. Similarly, salty, sour, sour, and sweet are oily. Astringent, bitter, and sweet are cold, bitter, astringent, and sweet are dull. Sour, hot, and bitter are light and rough. Hot, sour, and salty are hot and sharp. Untreated tastes and so on all have power.
