The Oral Instructions of Omniscient Lama: An Explanation of the Six Recollections, The Sunlight and Moonlight that Dispels the Darkness of Ignorance. The Oral Instructions of Omniscient Lama: An Explanation of the Six Recollections, The Sunlight and Moonlight that Dispels the Darkness of Ignorance. ༈ The Oral Instructions of Omniscient Lama: An Explanation of the Six Recollections, The Sunlight and Moonlight that Dispels the Darkness of Ignorance. Namo Guru. To the supreme crown jewel of all the learned and accomplished ones of the snowy land, Rongzom, the founder of the Ancient Translation School's teachings, and the Three Lineage Lamas who possess the four kayas, I prostrate with great reverence through the three doors. This is a presentation of the essential points of the Omniscient Lama's teachings, which encompass the entirety of the Victorious One's doctrine, the quintessence of the innermost instructions of the three classes of inner tantras, and the six dharmas that make non-distraction the path. Having thus completed the homage and the promise to compose, I will now explain the meaning of the six recollections as they are. The Omniscient Lama said: "Those newly engaging should not be distracted from activity. Students in equipoise and post-equipoise should not be distracted from the nature of reality. Through familiarity, recollection and appearance should not be distracted from wisdom. When merged into the expanse, there is no distraction and no distractor. When stability is perfected, the object of distraction is within the nature of reality. When dharma is exhausted, it transcends the realm of expression and designation. I pray that you lead us to such a state." Thus, firstly, the meaning of "Those newly engaging should not be distracted from activity" is: Those who are newly engaging should first, through hearing and thinking, sever exaggerations and deprecations regarding the dharma they are to practice and realize, and thereby gain a deep conviction from the depths of their hearts. Furthermore, when abiding in and cultivating the meaning as taught through the door of the lama's instructions, countless conceptual thoughts, like turbulent ocean waves, arise uncontrollably, like cotton carried by the wind, or like a butter lamp placed in the wind, unable to remain still for even a moment. Therefore, it is necessary to seek only shamatha as a basis for vipashyana. By attaching the rope of active mindfulness to any object of focus, whether external, such as a statue, or internal, such as winds and bindus, one should fix the mind one-pointedly and not be distracted for even a moment. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Since I wish to discipline my mind, I will guard it with all diligence and constantly examine it. For one who is not disciplined, what can I do?"

Thus it is. However, it cannot be accomplished with just a little and a short time, so one should practice until the five experiences are perfected. The five experiences are: In the commentary on Vimalamitra's Mudra Meditation, it says, "Wavering, attainment, habituation, stability, and perfection are the five ways in which meditative experience arises." As it is said, the so-called perfected experience is like an ocean without waves, having gained freedom over letting go, going, staying, and stopping. No matter what object one focuses on, one can simultaneously abide and gain stability in it. Therefore, when thoughts arise as antidotes, like a good servant, thoughts naturally obey. When one is accustomed to this, the teacher Vimalamitra said, "The first of the three liberations is liberation through recognizing thoughts, like meeting someone one has known before." This meaning is the same. Second, in the post-meditation, students should not be distracted from the nature of reality. The meaning of this is: Although one may seem to have won the battle against thoughts temporarily by perfecting the five experiences through the path of calm abiding alone, one cannot uproot the seeds of samsara. Therefore, one must generate the wisdom of insight and repeatedly practice union of calm abiding and insight. Thus, the aspect of mind remaining one-pointedly, which is not stolen by factors such as dullness and excitement, is calm abiding of meditative equipoise. And the aspect of not clinging even to the mere awareness of inner mind, which is the same in essence as that, is post-meditation or insight. In the Extensive Wisdom it says, "Calm abiding suppresses the afflictions from raising their heads, superior insight thoroughly uproots their roots." Like that, in meditative equipoise, the aspect of not losing the state of realizing the unborn nature of reality, being free from dullness and excitement, is the path of union of calm abiding and insight. In the meditative equipoise of being accustomed to this, in the post-meditation, everything that appears in the realm of the nature of reality, which is pure and like the sky, is merely the self-display of the awareness of the nature of reality, and does not have inherent existence. Therefore, all good and bad thoughts arising from mind and mental factors will dissolve into the realm of the nature of reality like clouds dissolving in the sky, so one must cultivate diligence and meditate. In the Samadhiraja Sutra it says, "The nature of reality as it is, if the mind is placed as it is, experience will arise without delay.
