Oral Tradition When Lama Rinpoche Speaks of Taking Refuge. Oral Tradition When Lama Rinpoche Speaks of Taking Refuge. The oral tradition when Lama Rinpoche speaks of taking refuge is: In general, the Nyingma school identifies the Lama as Guru Rinpoche. Guru Rinpoche himself is the embodiment of the Three Jewels, the embodiment of the Three Roots, the embodiment of the Three Kayas. He is the essence of all the Lamas who have transmitted from the Dharmakaya Vajradhara to the present root Lama. In particular, think of the Vajra brothers and sisters as being gathered together. Such a refuge, the essence of the totality, even a single pore knows and sees all knowable things, even if the appearance of the face and hands is not clear, it is enough to have the belief that it is actually present. That is the object of refuge. Then, in front of that, visualize yourself and all other sentient beings as having obtained a human body with eighteen leisures and endowments, and taking refuge with reverence in body, speech, and mind. That is the person who takes refuge. Then, the time of taking refuge is from today until the attainment of the essence of enlightenment or the state of complete Buddhahood, I go for refuge. That is what it means. It is necessary to keep the vows. That is the time and vow of taking refuge. Then, the reason for taking refuge is: Samsara is of the nature of suffering, and no one can save us from it except the Three Jewels. Knowing this, as it is said, "The faith that arises from knowing is pleasing to the All-Knowing One." Therefore, one must have faith in the object of refuge, the Three Jewels. Whenever delusions of the mind arise in the three times, if a true faith arises that remembers the Three Jewels of refuge, then immediately all of that will be liberated in its own place, and the intention of the Buddha will arise. In general, whatever view of Mahamudra or Dzogchen is practiced, faith alone must be made the main thing. Otherwise, one will not realize it. Then, it is said that if there is a gathering of friends to accumulate merit and purify obscurations, one will realize it. Generation of Bodhicitta is of two types: aspiration and application. Wishing in the mind to accomplish the fruit is the Bodhicitta of aspiration. Then, vowing to the cause, engaging in the virtue of body, speech, and mind is the Bodhicitta of application. Like that, when meditating on refuge and Bodhicitta, in terms of conduct, use clean and pleasing water.

Whatever pleasing flowers are seen, say: May the Three Jewels (manifesting the field of merit) be offered (accumulating merit), may all sentient beings, self and others (generating Bodhicitta), enter under the protection of the Three Jewels (dedication and aspiration). If you also think this way in your heart, then there is nothing more needed. The four causes for being born in Sukhavati are: Offering to Amitabha Buddha (the pure land with its support and supported), (accumulating merit), may all sentient beings, self and others (generating Bodhicitta) be born in Sukhavati (dedication and aspiration). In short, whenever you practice any white and virtuous Dharma, it must be encompassed by the three: preliminary, main practice, and concluding practice. If it is not encompassed, the Sutras say that the roots of virtue will be exhausted by anger and nihilistic views, etc. Some Sutras say that the merit arising from the giving of these three is exhausted. Offering is of course included in that. Some Sutras say that if a person who keeps pure morality, whatever prayers they make will all be fulfilled, so it is difficult to definitively say that the merit of morality will be exhausted. Regarding the merit arising from meditation, both the old and new schools in Tibet say that it will not be exhausted. This is because both the old and new schools place patience among the first three, patience is the antidote to anger. Of course, there are also Samadhi and wisdom. Diligence is like a companion needed at all times, it is a friend to all. All meritorious activities are included in these three. Paltrul Rinpoche and Zhechen Gyaltsab, etc., many wise and accomplished ones have the same view, saying that the roots of virtue encompassed by the preliminary, main practice, and concluding practice will not be exhausted. Those great scholars must have quoted the views of the Sutra Pitaka, but I don't know what it is specifically. Therefore, first examine your own motivation, and then correct your motivation. The primary beginning of all Dharmas, like Sanskrit in India, lies in one's own continuum. The peerless supreme Lama said: Examine it well. Like this, examining motivation has three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Among them, virtuous motivation is divided into two types: the motivation to accomplish one's own benefit and the motivation to accomplish the benefit of others. Non-virtuous motivation is: the thought of pursuing worldly gains such as praise, honor, and fame in this life, and only seeking the happiness of gods and humans, etc. Neutral refers to not even aiming for one's own benefit, let alone the benefit of others.
