Instructions on the Fourfold Union of Buddhas and the Three Noble Ones. Instructions on the Fourfold Union of Buddhas and the Three Noble Ones. To practice the Fourfold Union of Buddhas, there are two parts: the main practice and the preliminary practice. First, during the main practice, blocking the appearance of daytime with seals involves binding oneself with samaya vows through the four aspects of view, meditation, conduct, and result in the path of verbal empowerment, Trekchö and Tögal. In the evening, gathering the senses into the essential point involves practicing the path of secret wisdom. At noon, condensing knowledge into the vase involves gathering the five senses and six consciousnesses, along with their objects and subjects, into the expanse of reality, thereby manifesting the clear light of dreams. In the early morning, clarifying wisdom involves practicing the purification of the elements. So it is said. During the preliminary practice, blocking the appearance of daytime with seals involves visualizing the outer world as the Copper-Colored Mountain of Glory, and so on. In the early morning, white light radiates from the lama's body above one's crown, striking all appearances of form, awakening them in the mandala of the body. Red light radiates from the speech, striking all sounds, good and bad, awakening them in the mandala of speech. Blue light radiates from the mind, striking the deluded thoughts of all sentient beings, awakening them in the mandala of mind. Alternatively, visualize the three syllables ༀ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari: ओँ, Romanized Sanskrit: oṃ, Literal meaning: Om), ཨཱཿ (Tibetan, Devanagari: आः, Romanized Sanskrit: āḥ, Literal meaning: Ah), ཧཱུྃ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari: हुं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal meaning: Hum) appearing at the three places of the lama, from which rays of their respective colors radiate, purifying the clinging to impure ordinary appearances, sounds, and thoughts, and awakening or manifesting them as the three mandalas of the lama's body, speech, and mind, according to their true nature. This is said to be the oral transmission of Zhabdrung Rinpoche. Following after past events and so on, the arising of deluded thoughts is the mind consciousness. If one thinks whether this mind consciousness needs to be eliminated, it is not so. Because wisdom has not yet arisen in the state of an ordinary being, this mind consciousness needs to accept and reject all dharmas, such as virtue and vice. Therefore, mind consciousness is more important than omniscience. As it is said: "Mind goes, mind goes, mind goes supremely. Mind goes at the head of all dharmas." Looking inward and grasping at self is afflicted mind. These two need to be liberated in the realm of equanimity view, without accumulating habitual tendencies. So it is said. Blocking the appearance of daytime with seals is the essential instruction for meditating on Trekchö and Tögal.
