It is said that there are guiding methods that precede, but here it is the union of shamatha and vipashyana from the beginning. In any tradition of Sutra or Tantra, there is no pure view that is not united with shamatha and vipashyana. The king of all methods and instructions for abiding is faith alone. The faithful person who is ordinary remembers the qualities and kindness of the Guru and the Three Jewels, and through the power of faith that knows the profound essence of the Secret Supreme, the delusions of the three times of mind caused by ignorance and clinging to reality, and all the husks of experiential attachment, dissolve into the expanse like great clouds dissolving into the sky. Without being subject to circumstances, one enters with single-pointed joy and delight, like a swan entering a lotus lake, or a bee flying through a fragrant lotus grove. For those who are not like this, twenty-one, seven, five, three, etc., guiding methods are taught according to their disposition. For the object of focus, the one that removes conceptual thoughts is Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hūṃ), the one that cuts is Phaṭ (藏文:ཕཊ,梵文天城体:फट,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,汉语字面意思:Phaṭ), the one that burns habitual patterns is Raṃ (藏文:རཾ,梵文天城体:रं,梵文罗马拟音:raṃ,汉语字面意思:Raṃ), etc., and the methods of practice are taught. For those who can never find an opportunity to abide, the method of placing the guidance of the Asura war is taught. If the student is unwavering, honest, and does not lie, and if the Guru knows how to distinguish the differences in dispositions, then for those with an earth disposition, because they are tired and heavy, the impurities must be removed. For those with a wind disposition, because they are agitated and scattered, the method of relaxation must be taught. For those with a fire disposition, if they understand it today, they are gone tomorrow, so they need a method of being stable and appearing to be something. For those with a water disposition, because they have strong clinging, even if various experiences arise, if experiences arise where the sky is filled with gods, the space is filled with demons, and the earth is filled with spirits, they should be told that there is no acceptance or rejection, that everything is self-appearance, and thus they should be turned towards awareness. For those with a space disposition, even if they make great effort, they will dissolve into the expanse without clinging, so they can be left on their own path. Therefore, when abiding, one must separate the pure from the impure and remove the impurities. In the pure, clarity must arise. If not, sinking obscures the pure, and dullness obscures the clarity. In the clarity, there must be relaxation. In the expanse of clarity and purity, there must be unobstructed arising. If not, even if there is abiding, there is no liberation, like the gods of meditative absorption.

The existence of a certain "absence" is the correct sign of the path, free from any clinging to inner or outer. If the thoughts of a beginner, which are neither beneficial nor harmful, are liberated without continuation, that is merely a simple vipassanā. The king of all vipassanā is called the luminosity of awareness. The appearances that are grasped by memory, if liberated without continuation, are definitely not called delusion. Delusion is when one forgets practice and becomes unrestrained, and afflictions arise naturally; that is called delusion. Therefore, there must be a liberation point in the movement. In this way, understanding the alternating manner of abiding and movement, Mahāmudrā calls it awareness, but it is not the actual fundamental awareness that distinguishes mind and awareness. Intelligence, awareness, and consciousness are the same in meaning, only different in name; therefore, Dzogchen calls this memory. In general, all conceptual thoughts have the expanse of the ground and the pervasiveness of awareness, so it is the actual awareness of skill. In this way, understanding how these containers and contents are pervaded by the expanse and awareness, one understands a little of the meaning of the instructions of the waves circling in the ocean, and the all-pervasive awareness of compassion. Also, the method of dispelling dullness, the method of relaxing when agitated, the distinctions of the three realms and the three kāyas, etc., if one distinguishes well whether they are correct or not and constantly cultivates them, then the various appearances of joy and sorrow, know that the key is that they arise from one's own mind and dissolve into it. The appearances of joy and sorrow, whether inner or outer, do not have even a particle of inherent existence, but they arise from the mind's proximate cause, which is caused by external conditions. As the Buddha said in the Vinaya Sutra, "If one sees a pleasing person..." etc. Therefore, know that all these appearances of joy and sorrow are the sole empty form arising from the expanse of luminosity. The way to dissolve into it is quoted from the Kalachakra scripture. Dissolving does not mean that material things like earth and stones dissolve into the mind, but rather that thoughts of good, bad, and neutral arise from the expanse and naturally dissipate or liberate in the expanse. To recognize all appearances as the self-appearance of the mind means that both the Paramita Vehicle and the Unsurpassed Tantra consider appearance and mind to be one. Because external appearances have shapes and colors, while the mind that possesses them does not, the two are different in manner.
