A Concise Note on the Preliminary Instructions A Concise Note on the Preliminary Instructions This is a work entitled "A Concise Note on the Preliminary Instructions." It is repeatedly emphasized that at the beginning of practicing the sacred Dharma, it is crucial to examine the motivation of one's own mind-stream. Motivations are divided into three types: virtuous motivation, non-virtuous motivation, and neutral motivation, as stated by many holy beings such as Paltrul Rinpoche. Non-virtuous motivation is inseparable from the mind of the eight worldly concerns, so the actions of body and speech arising from it are merely superficial. Even if there are seemingly virtuous actions such as protecting from fear and offering good wishes, they do not truly lead to the sacred Dharma, and therefore must be abandoned like poisonous food. Neutral motivation is not transformed by either virtuous or non-virtuous thoughts. It is merely the thought of wanting to engage in the Dharma, knowing that there is something to be accomplished and meditated upon that is neutral. For example, it is like a wild man imitating human behavior; like a dog being infatuated with a person; like a child picking flowers; like shooting an empty arrow. In such a state, no matter how vast the virtuous deeds performed, there will be no seed of liberation in the mind, only fruitless effort, as stated by Dza Paltrul Rinpoche. If one makes the person authoritative, and makes the Dharma authoritative, there might be a seed of liberation. Lama Lungtok said, "Even if there is just a little seed of liberation." Therefore, it is crucial to correct the neutral motivation. Virtuous motivation is further divided into the motivation to accomplish one's own benefit and the motivation to accomplish the benefit of others. Among these, the motivation to accomplish one's own benefit is also inseparable from the mind of pursuing self-satisfaction. Therefore, it must be encompassed by a genuine virtuous motivation to accomplish the benefit of others. Next are the three lines of "Lama Khyen": Dharmakaya Lama Immaculate Light, etc. There are explanations that combine them with the three kayas, and there are explanations that combine them with view, meditation, and conduct, etc. There are many explanations. Here, it is Namchöpa, a disciple of Kunchen Jigme Lingpa of Drakkar Chenpo of Kushok, his disciple Aba Phuk Trulku, his disciple Kushok

Ga Drakkar (place name). Heard from the presence of the incomparable Lama Rinpoche. Note: According to oral tradition, it is taught in conjunction with the three: discipline, bodhicitta, and mantra. Lama, be mindful, first, wherever one is born in this cycle of existence, high or low, knowing that one has not transcended the nature of suffering, and for a method to liberate from this cycle, Lama, the Three Jewels, you will not deceive, with a mind of renunciation, one must call out in the manner of prayer. Secondly, all sentient beings abiding in the three realms of samsara, there is not one who has not been one's own parent, in order to liberate all those parents from the ocean of suffering of samsara, and to attain the state of omniscient Buddhahood, Lama, the Three Jewels, you know, with a mind of bodhicitta, one must call out. Thirdly, all phenomena encompassed by the outer and inner world, in terms of their mode of existence, have never transcended the mandala of the body, speech, and mind of the Buddhas, and in order for oneself and all other sentient beings to realize this, Lama, the Three Jewels, please bless, in conjunction with the view of the purity of appearances and existence, one must pray. Or, may the renunciation of aversion to samsara arise in the mindstream of oneself and all other sentient beings. Likewise, may the precious bodhicitta of seeking benefit for others arise in the mindstream of oneself and all other sentient beings. May the pure vision of the purity of appearances and existence arise in the mindstream of oneself and all other sentient beings, and so on, one may think. At the time of the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, without accomplishing the great ultimate goal, but instead letting it be wasted meaninglessly, one must reverse that mindset. The way in which a human body endowed with eight freedoms and ten endowments is difficult to obtain through the three ways of example, number, and reason. To meditate on the greatness of its meaning once obtained is the method or key to reversal. The way to reverse by focusing on one object, with the manner of perception going into contradiction. The standard is like that of Chennga-wa (person's name). In short, one must not let the support of the body of leisure and endowment be wasted, one must take the essence. Taking the essence is accomplishing the state of Buddhahood. The Buddha has two bodies, the Dharmakaya and the Rupakaya.
