Distinguishing the two methods, the gateway to the definitive meaning. Distinguishing the two methods, the gateway to the definitive meaning. Distinguishing the two methods, the gateway to the definitive meaning, is present, named brief, clear, pure, and complete. Om Svasti! Regarding the current topic, there are two methods in the Mahayana: the treatises of the Yogacara school, such as those of the venerable Maitreya, the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu, Dignaga, Dharmakirti, and other proponents of the Vijnanavada school, and the meaning of the sutras of the third turning of the wheel of Dharma, such as the Samdhinirmocana Sutra; and the treatises of the Madhyamaka school that asserts emptiness of inherent existence, such as the meaning of the Madhyamaka collections of reasoning of the teacher, the noble Nagarjuna, and the views of Buddhapalita, Bhavaviveka, Chandrakirti, and others, which are the stages of the direct teachings of the intermediate turning of the wheel of Dharma. In Tibet, those who hold the Madhyamaka school of emptiness of inherent existence, which is widely known as Rangtong (self-empty), say that the former is the Mind-Only school, and the latter is the Madhyamaka school. And those who are widely known as proponents of Shentong (other-empty), who consider the sutras of the third turning of the wheel to be the ultimate definitive meaning, say that the latter school is generally the Madhyamaka school, but there are two kinds of definitive meaning in Madhyamaka, temporary and ultimate, and that is the temporary definitive meaning. And the former school considers the temporary school to be other-powered truly existent. Furthermore, the schools that assert appearances to be true are all Mind-Only, and all phenomena included in the imputed and other-powered, grasping and being grasped, are not truly existent, and the school that teaches that the wisdom of the perfected two-without-self-nature is truly existent, which other Tibetans call the Mind-Only false aspect, is the great Madhyamaka of ultimate definitive meaning. Therefore, the Rangtong proponents consider the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wheel of Dharma of the four truths, to be provisional, the intermediate turning of the wheel of Dharma of no characteristics to be the ultimate definitive meaning, and the third turning of the wheel of Dharma of good distinction to be the temporary definitive meaning, that is, provisional. And the Shentong proponents consider the first turning to be provisional, the intermediate turning to be the temporary definitive meaning, and the third turning to teach the ultimate definitive meaning.

Furthermore, the first turning of the wheel is the collection of scriptures common to the Hearers, therefore it proclaims that all conventional phenomena exist. In the intermediate [turning], the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras state that all phenomena from form up to omniscience are not established by their own nature, and that there is not even a particle of phenomenon that exists. Finally, the ultimate [turning] is that the ultimate truth seen by the wisdom of the noble ones, the indivisibility of the realm of reality and awareness, is truly existent because its essence is unchanging from the beginning. These permanent, stable, and enduring [qualities] are truly existent. And non-things, such as forms, objects, eyes, faculties, minds, mental factors, the eight consciousness aggregates, the fifty-one mental factors, etc., which are included by grasping and being grasped, are merely transformations of that ultimate reality, like reflections in a mirror, and are said to be without truth because they are unborn from the beginning. Therefore, in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it is said that the first turning of the wheel is taught to those who enter the Hearer Vehicle, the intermediate [turning] to those who enter the Great Vehicle, and the final [turning] to those who enter various vehicles. And it is said that the first and intermediate [turnings] are supreme, occasional, of interpretable meaning, and the basis of disputes, while the final [turning] is unsurpassed, not occasional, of definitive meaning, and not the basis of disputes. Furthermore, the statement in the intermediate turning of the wheel that all phenomena are without inherent existence is made with the intention of applying the three types of non-inherent existence to the three: the imputed, the dependent, and the perfectly established. It is not intended to mean that phenomena that exist ultimately are completely impossible. And, "The consciousness that takes is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a stream of water, it is not proper to conceive of it as self, this I have not shown to children." After stating in the first turning of the wheel that everything exists, if it is stated immediately afterwards that this ultimately established truth exists, then, because sentient beings have the habit of viewing [things] as self from the very beginning, and because of the conditions related to this, there is a place where they will conceive of a self of a person. Therefore, in the intermediate turning of the wheel, instead of saying that this uncontaminated realm exists, it is stated that all phenomena are unestablished, and the reasons for this are explained in detail. Among these, the self-empty proponents generally consider the sūtras of the final turning of the wheel, and especially this very sūtra, to be of interpretable meaning. And the reason for this is that the intermediate
