Commentary on the Sutra of Longevity. Commentary on the Sutra of Longevity. The Commentary on the Sutra of Longevity is present. H homage to the Bhagavan, Lord of the Dance of the Lotus! This Bhagavan, the Sutra of the Hundred and Eight Names of Immeasurable Life and Wisdom, known as the Dharani, should be determined with three meanings: first, establishing the basis of discussion; second, stating the meaning of the Sutra; and finally, rejoicing, which are these three aspects. The first is "Thus have I heard," etc. The Sutra that appears below, the one who compiled it, Vajrapani, heard it "thus." Although the profound meaning is the realm of the sole Buddha and cannot be understood, through the power of the blessings of the Tathagata, at a time when it can be understood by the wisdom of hearing, it is spoken thus. Who speaks it? The Bhagavan, adorned with infinite qualities, the unsurpassed teacher, the Buddha Shakyamuni. Where is it? Formerly, the dwelling held by the two sages, Nyanpa and Yöpa, which later became a city, is Shravasti, mentioning the dwellings of the leaders of the land, such as the king. Jeta Grove is the younger brother of King Prasenajit, formerly his garden, later purchased by Anathapindika, who covered the ground with gold and valued it, and in the center of the grove adorned with roots, flowers, and fruits, a vast and magnificent monastery was built, and it was there. With what retinue was it heard? With monks, etc. Monks are of five types: name monks, vow monks, begging monks, petitioning and karma monks, and monks of true meaning. Here, some say that the fourth is also possible, but all are truly Arhat monks. Sangha means assembly, and because it is an assembly of Arhats, there is no assembly superior to this, therefore it is the Great Sangha. Their number is one hundred and thirteen monks, and although the chief of the retinue is the Bodhisattva, the Shravakas are mentioned first. Those Shravakas, except for the blessings of the Tathagata himself, are not able to go to other Buddha-fields.

Those monks are mentioned first because they are the unique retinue of the Teacher Shakya Simha himself, and because they share the same sphere of activity with all ordinary beings such as non-Buddhists residing in the land of Rungwa at that time. Bodhisattvas are mentioned later because they are the opposite of that. Some say that there is a difference between ordained and lay people, but to say that the great princes are lay people is to commit an unforgivable sin, which is similar to the wisdom of some of the Shravaka sects who have turned away from the Mahayana. Among them, a Bodhisattva is one who is rich in the two types of mind generation. A great Bodhisattva is one who possesses immeasurable samadhi, dharani, and clairvoyance, and has attained the same state as the Vajra body and mind. Moreover, there are many chief sons of the Buddhas, such as Manjushri, who dwell together with limitless beings. Among them, saying "like this" etc. is the perfection of Dharma. "At one time" means the perfection of time. Bhagavan is the perfection of the teacher. "In Jeta Grove" etc. is the perfection of place. "Hundreds of thousands of monks" etc. is the perfection of retinue. Secondly, in the middle, the main subject matter of the Sutra Pitaka is explained, which includes the common explanation of the Paramita way and the explanation of the uncommon meaning of the Mantra. First, there is the connection and the main subject matter. First, the words of connection are, "Then, at that time" etc., because it is free from the suffering and afflictions of samsara, and all the coarse sensations of the ripening body, therefore it is peaceful. Because it possesses the glory of fulfilling the benefit of oneself and others, it is Manjushri. Because it abides in the state of youth, it is youthful. That Just as the eldest son of a king, who is in the position of heir to the throne, is called a youth. A Bodhisattva who has received the empowerment of great light in the state of the cloud of Dharma is also called the state of youth because he is the eldest son who has attained empowerment. Another explanation is that from the moment of first generating the mind, one who constantly abides in pure conduct is also called the state of youth. Among them, here, after knowing the time of those to be tamed.
