Commentary on the Heart Sutra. Commentary on the Heart Sutra. Herein is the Commentary on the Heart Sutra. Namo Buddhaya. Briefly speaking about the meaning of the Heart Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom: Although the term "Perfection of Wisdom" has many meanings, the actual and main one is the wisdom of non-duality, the essence of the Sugata, which understands the reality of all knowable things. This sutra teaches the nature of that Perfection of Wisdom, its characteristic of being free from elaboration, its characteristic of being immutable, and its characteristic of being all-encompassing. It teaches these three main points. Because the words are very few, it is called the Heart Sutra. How does it teach? By "no form," etc., it teaches freedom from elaboration; by "unborn," etc., it teaches immutability; and by "form is emptiness," etc., it teaches being all-encompassing. This sutra has three meanings: the introduction, the establishment of the meaning, and the rejoicing and praise. First, there are two aspects: the words of the setting and the gateway to the arising of the sutra's teaching. The first is "Thus I have heard," etc. The place is Vulture Peak Mountain within Rajagriha (Royal City). The Teacher, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, together with a great assembly of monks, that is, the Sangha of Shravaka Arhats, and a vast Sangha of Bodhisattva Aryas gathered from various Buddhafields, were dwelling together. At a time when all the assemblies of attendants had become vessels for this Dharma and their minds were ripe, I, the compiler Vajrapani, heard these words of the Heart Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom without error. Thus, by ascertaining the place and time and establishing the assembly of attendants as witnesses, it is to generate certainty that it is the Teacher's speech and to generate wondrous faith. Second, the gateway to the arising of the sutra's teaching is "At that time, the Bhagavan," etc. Because it is difficult to realize, it is profound, that is, the reality, the Perfection of Wisdom. The wisdom that directly realizes it is appearance, meaning it is actually seen. The Samadhi endowed with that wisdom is Samadhi. Although the Bhagavan is always abiding in that Samadhi, in the appearance of the disciples gathered there, it appears as if newly entering into the Samadhi of profound appearance.

Furthermore, when the Bhagavan had just entered into Samadhi, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara also, with the wisdom of manifestly realizing and practicing the profound Prajnaparamita, abiding in the knowledge of contemplative discernment connected with Samadhi, that is, the wisdom of knowing. Thus, the cause of actually practicing such Prajnaparamita is to contemplate and meditate with wisdom on the five aggregates as being unestablished in their own nature and empty. The very emptiness of the five aggregates' own nature is shown separately from the profound Prajnaparamita. Since the profound Prajnaparamita is established as not being empty in its own nature, this is the first sentence that clearly shows the Madhyamaka of Other-Emptiness. Connecting the beginning and the end from when Avalokiteshvara had just shown the manner of newly entering into Samadhi in Prajnaparamita. Secondly, in ascertaining the meaning, it is ascertained through questions and answers, and doubts are dispelled through accommodating changes. Firstly, there is the question and the answer. The first is: Then, by the power of the Buddha, etc. The Shravakas, such as Shariputra, etc., could not even ask about such a profound Dharma by their own power, but by the power of the blessing of the Buddha, the venerable Shariputra said this to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara. What did he say? Whether a son of good family, or a daughter of good family, anyone who, having generated the mind of Bodhi, desires to practice, that is, to cultivate, this profound Prajnaparamita through the three doors of hearing, thinking, and meditating, how should one train in the method of meditation? The second is the answer, which includes: briefly showing the method of practicing Prajnaparamita, extensively explaining the nature of Prajnaparamita, showing the benefits of realizing it on the path, explaining the result of realizing it through that path, showing the Dharani mantra with benefits, and advising to study Prajnaparamita in a way that summarizes the meaning. The first is: Thus, etc. When Shariputra said this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Arya Avalokiteshvara said this to Shariputra. What does it mean to say thus?
