A Brief Explanation of the Sutra on Recollecting the Three Jewels A Brief Explanation of the Sutra on Recollecting the Three Jewels A Brief Explanation of the Sutra on Recollecting the Three Jewels Om Svasti. Homage to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha! Now, I will briefly explain the meaning of the Sutra on Recollecting the Three Jewels. Here, the meaning of "recollection" is to follow after the qualities of things as they are, without error. This is the root of all white Dharma, for the sake of generating faith in the supreme object. Faith, conviction, and respect are explained as having very different characteristics of mind in many cases, but in some other cases, they are also used as synonyms. However, in this context, the three become one in the main point of meaning, and there are also slight differences in scope from small parts. That is, Faith is of three kinds: clear faith, believing faith, and aspiring faith. The first is: here, after hearing the qualities of the Three Jewels, to regard them as supreme, to know them as supreme, and also to have great joy in the mind, endowed with supreme pleasure. Believing faith is to believe that the Tathagata has such and such qualities, and to believe that what is said in the scriptures is true and certain, and also to believe that the realized Dharma and the Sangha are endowed with such and such qualities. Also, to believe that the truth of cessation, which is the ultimate Dharma, is free from all faults. Whatever is free from all faults is endowed with all qualities, and whatever is not endowed with benefits is a fault. Aspiring faith is to aspire and desire to attain the state of Buddha and Sangha, to desire to understand the Dharma of the scriptures, to desire to manifest the Dharma of the ultimate realm, and to desire to generate the realized Dharma in one's own mindstream. These are the actual aspiring faith. As for mere names, such as desiring to make offerings to the Three Jewels, desiring to proclaim their qualities, and desiring to propagate the scriptures, these are also aspiring faith.

No. These are also because faith preceded by joy and trust is like that. Desiring offerings for the sake of gain and fame, and for the sake of competition, etc., desiring those things is merely an expectation for those things, but it is not faith. What is called "aspiration" is to hold firmly to a definite object. Here, it refers to knowing that what has qualities and what is not deceptive has qualities and is not deceptive, which is mainly faith of trust. Also, from the Abhidharma, it says, "Joy and reverence are shame and knowledge." Although there are such cases, here, reverence is to know that object itself is supreme, so it mostly belongs to the faith of joy. Also, like "reverence for the training," there is also a kind of faith of trust. Other than that, "applying with reverence" refers to strong diligence, but it is not applied here. Whoever has perfect faith in the Three Jewels will take refuge, and will also take the vows of individual liberation and generate the mind of enlightenment, and will also enter the three trainings and the perfections. Therefore, the root of all paths is faith, and that also depends on remembering the Three Jewels. Among them, first, taking the example of remembering the Buddha, like this, "Bhagavan" etc. The first nine words here are a summary, and are universally known in all vehicles, great and small. Among them, "like this" means that all the qualities to be explained are like this. That is, nine meanings, summarized as: Obstacles subdued and explained, Abandonment and perfect wisdom, Continuum and how to depart, Looking at the world, fortunate ones subdued, The teacher himself is nine qualities, The basis of where to abide. Among them, subduing obstacles refers to "Bhagavan," that is, the Buddha who possesses the characteristics of Bhagavan. Among them, obstacles are the four maras: the aggregates, afflictions, death, and the son of the gods. The first three have been abandoned, and because he has transcended the object of harm by the fourth mara, he possesses the quality of subduing the four maras. Among them, the Sanskrit (bhagavān,梵文天城体:भगवान्,梵文罗马拟音:bhagavan,具德) is called "Bhagavan,"
