The Text on the Signs and Measures of the Six-Branched Yoga The Text on the Signs and Measures of the Six-Branched Yoga The Text on the Signs and Measures of the Six-Branched Yoga is present. Namo Gurave. Regarding the signs and measures of practicing the profound path of Vajra Yoga, I shall explain the rough classifications of signs. These roots are clearly stated in the tantras and commentaries. The previous lineage masters have accomplished all of these through experience. Even now, if the first branch (withdrawal of the senses) is taken as real, and the others as conforming, then the main parts of the experience, the main parts, will have signs appearing, and the lineage of generating qualities will be continuous. Moreover, when the experiences and signs of other Tibetan Dharma teachings are practiced now, they may or may not match the explanations. The reason why the signs in these Dharmas appear without error and with certainty is that the root of all the essential instructions is taught completely in the tantras and the three cycles of mind commentaries. This essential instruction is the unerring intention of Vajradhara. Others do not have evidence like the three cycles of mind commentaries, and the words of the tantras are not clear and are hidden. Because they have passed through many lineages, the subtle points of the essential instructions have been lost from the lineage. In the preliminary three isolations, various uncertain visions and bodily experiences arise. During the three isolations and the retraction, depending on the situation, if the body posture is bent forward, then the nada (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:nada, nada, sound) in the center of the heart meets the air in front, and consciousness will suddenly arise. If you lean to the right, you will meet fire and feel agitated. If you lean to the left, you will meet water and feel confused. If you lean back, you will meet earth and feel sinking and stiff. Avoiding these, straightening the spine, the channels in the heart center straighten, and the life-force air is bound. By doing the vajra posture and the lower lock well, the downward-clearing air can be brought down. By bending the neck, the upward-moving air can be raised. Thirdly, in equal filling, it is necessary to make it happen naturally even with force, because this maintains equality. Through the gaze, the air moving in the eyes flows. Bending the neck, the upper and lower teeth close naturally. Pressing the tip of the tongue against the upper palate, the channels of the ears also bend, thereby binding the air of the ears and tongue.

In conjunction with that posture, slowly exhale through the nostrils, this is nasal air; place fists on the thighs, keeping the body moderately tense and relaxed, this is the air that moves autonomously in the body; all of these combined control the pervasive air. However, relying solely on the body posture itself cannot completely control it, but rather it is achieved by combining the body posture with focus. Having practiced in this way, if the experience of the mind is taken as primary, then the first stage of experience is: the mind does not abide even for a moment, thoughts are more numerous than before, and are extremely scattered and agitated. Some people have one thought following another, continuously, and the types of thoughts are all different. Some people always remember the same object, only the form of the thoughts is slightly different. At this time, one might think: Am I unable to achieve meditation? Or think: Would it be better to do something else? This is because when one had not practiced meditation before, although there were many thoughts, the attention was directed outward, so one was not aware of them. Now, with attention directed inward, one is only more sensitive to the flow of thoughts, the thoughts are not more numerous than before. Furthermore, at this stage, most people experience great pain in the body because they are not proficient in the body posture, and there are phenomena of difficulty breathing and trembling. The mind also feels irritable, wants to leave, and feels oppressed. If there is an old illness from before, one feels that it has relapsed. This is a small result of slightly grasping the mind, it is the experience called "agitation," like a waterfall on a cliff. The second stage is: without regarding these as faults or virtues, neither rejoicing nor disliking, continue to practice. In this way, like before, although there are many thoughts, they will gradually calm down a little, and the body and breath will feel comfortable. After that, thoughts arise again as before, and the body and breath feel uncomfortable again. This is the experience called "attainment," like a small bird or water flowing in a narrow cave. The third stage is: continuing to practice, one will feel the head and upper body heavy. One feels that the thoughts are more subtle than before, and the strength is also less, and they will quickly disappear, like a spark rising into the sky. Sometimes thoughts will stop arising. Sometimes thoughts will not change, but will suddenly become dull, vague, unclear, and not intense. At this time, it is very important to strive to practice with focus, so that awareness becomes clear.
