Instructions on the Importance of Recognizing the Lama as the Embodiment of All Sources of Refuge Instructions on the Importance of Recognizing the Lama as the Embodiment of All Sources of Refuge Om Swasti! I prostrate to the noble lamas who possess realization and compassion. The root of all accomplishments is devotion to the lama. If one cultivates devotion with the hope of attaining accomplishments, one is placing one's own desires first. It is crucial to recognize the lama as the embodiment of all sources of refuge. If one is not satisfied with the lama as he is and elevates him to the status of a buddha, one is missing the point of devotion. Whatever arises, one should recognize it as a manifestation of the dharmakaya, appearing in whatever way is necessary to tame beings. If one sees a fault in the lama's actions and tries to interpret it as something good, one's perception is impure. Devotion should be like a burning fire that has no place to stand, seemingly nonexistent. However, if devotion without attachment does not arise and dissolve on its own, it is just an ordinary, positive thought. Therefore, one needs devotion and supplication that are free from hope and fear. When one supplicates one noble lama, the blessings of all lamas enter. This is essential. One can also follow the practice of visualizing all lamas merging into one, or not. In essence, the minds of all lamas are like the sky, unified in the indivisible clarity and emptiness that is free from conceptualization. Their radiance manifests as compassion, which is also unified. Through their power, their activities benefit sentient beings, which is also unified. From our own perspective, all the lamas, starting with the first teacher who taught us to read, encourage us to do good, which is also unified. Although there are various different methods and ways of teaching and guiding, they are all just expedient means for the time and circumstances, and to tame beings according to their needs. In essence, they allow us to utilize the two obscurations, perfect the two accumulations, and ultimately lead us to buddhahood, which is also unified. When we supplicate and meditate with devotion, the lamas that appear vividly are manifestations of our own mind. Therefore, they are unified in the self-nature of one's own mind. Knowing this, supplicate as follows: Om, the vajra of the body, inseparable from appearance and emptiness, pervades all phenomena of samsara and nirvana. Ah, the vajra of speech, inseparable from sound and emptiness, although free from expression and effort, appears in all names and words. Hum, the vajra of mind, inseparable from bliss and emptiness, although without effort,

Now I know. Ho! Wisdom Vajra, complete with all qualities, Although unchanging, appears everywhere in samsara and nirvana. The lords of all Buddhas, the four Vajras, I take refuge in you, the all-encompassing Lama. I pray to you, the all-encompassing sacred Dharma. May you, the all-encompassing Sangha, bestow your blessings. I prostrate to you, the all-encompassing Yidam. May you, the all-encompassing Dharma protectors, grant your protection. O Protector, may I never be separated from you, May I accomplish the deeds that please you. Precious Lama with the signs, With intense longing I pray, For the sake of blessing all sentient beings like myself, Please come and abide here. Your body blazes with the light of marks and signs, Emanations and further emanations are beyond number. Buddhas filling the sky, And heroes and heroines throng like clouds. Light and rays, rainbow light intertwine, Possessing the glory of a hundred million suns. The sound of Dharma resounds like thunder, The experience of great bliss buzzes. Please bestow your blessings now, Bestow your blessings in this very place. Having realized that mind and wisdom are inseparable, May I become one with you, the venerable one. May my body become equal to the sky, And accomplish the deeds of the body. May my speech pervade all that is knowable, And accomplish all your words without exception. With the minds of all beings becoming one taste, May all the deeds of the mind be accomplished. At all times and in all circumstances, May I rely on your lotus feet, And uphold your words exactly as they are. Until I realize the nature of reality, And until I gain stability, May I respectfully carry out all your instructions, May I have unwavering devotion, Whatever beating, striking, scolding you may do, May I not give rise to discouragement or wrong views, May my devotion increase ever more. Household affairs and sinful actions, Whatever conduct I may see, May I realize that they are skillful means for taming beings, Please bestow your blessings. Father Lama, Father Lama, Father Lama, Father Lama, you know yourself. Venerable Lama, have mercy. I pray to you who skillfully accomplish the benefit of beings. I pray to you, the inexpressible Dharmakaya. I pray to you, the Buddhas of the three times. I pray to you, who possess power and ability. May you, whose wisdom pervades the sky, look upon me with compassion. You, whose nature is love
