Establishing the Union of the Two Accumulations of the Path: Establishing the Union of the Two Accumulations of the Path: Now, in order to accomplish the union of the two bodies of the fruition, one should establish its cause, the union of the two accumulations of the path. This again has two aspects: Identifying the nature of the two accumulations: The Accumulation of Merit: What is the accumulation of merit? Lord Maitreya said, "Giving and ethics are the accumulation of merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom, and patience, diligence, and meditation are taught in both accumulations." If it is grasped without contemplating the three circles, then other than wisdom, the first five perfections are also taught as the accumulation of wisdom. In the Sutra and the Ornament of the Sutras, it is said that the first three perfections are the discipline of ethics, meditation is the discipline of concentration, wisdom is the discipline of wisdom, and diligence is all-pervading. Similarly, the first three perfections are the accumulation of merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom, and diligence and meditation are said to be all-pervading. Similarly, the first three perfections are for the benefit of others, and the latter three are the antidotes to afflictions. The reason for placing the six perfections in order is that the latter arises in dependence on the former, the former is coarse and the latter is subtle, and the former is inferior while the latter is superior. This is explained in the Sutra and the Ornament of the Sutras. Furthermore, if the ten perfections are not taught, how are the latter four included in the six perfections? The Sutra says, "The perfection of skillful means is gathered by the three friends of giving, ethics, and patience, the perfection of aspiration is gathered by diligence, the perfection of strength is gathered by meditation, and the perfection of wisdom is gathered by wisdom as friends." The noble Nagarjuna also said, "Ethics and giving are for the benefit of others, diligence and patience are for oneself, meditation and wisdom are the cause of liberation, this is the condensed meaning of the Great Vehicle." And, "Therefore, these two accumulations are the cause of attaining Buddhahood, so in short, always rely on merit and wisdom." Some people think that Buddhahood can be attained only by the accumulation of merit.

And, some say that enlightenment can be achieved solely through the accumulation of wisdom. However, the teachings mentioned above have refuted this claim. In particular, the noble Asanga, who attained the third bhumi, stated in his own words: "Therefore, both of these are the main factors for attaining the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Merit is the main factor, and wisdom is unsurpassed. If either of these two accumulations of merit and wisdom is lacking, the bodhisattva will not manifest perfect enlightenment." Therefore, please do not treat the two accumulations as separate, but practice them in a unified manner. Extensive Explanation of the Wisdom Accumulation Secondly, regarding the extensive explanation of the wisdom accumulation, it includes: the wisdom accumulation that accords with the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wisdom accumulation that accords with the second turning of the wheel of Dharma, and the wisdom accumulation that accords with the third turning of the wheel of Dharma. Similarly, the views, practices, and results of each of the three wheels of Dharma are explained individually, and the three aspects of refutation, establishment, and abandonment in establishing the three wheels as definitive and provisional are extensively explained. Explanation in Accordance with the Three Wheels of Dharma Among them, the wisdom accumulation that accords with the first turning of the wheel of Dharma is: meditating on all conditioned phenomena as impermanent; similarly, meditating on all contaminated phenomena as suffering; all phenomena as selfless; and meditating on all nirvana as peaceful; and meditating on the infallibility of karmic results. Similarly, the wisdom accumulation that accords with the second turning of the wheel of Dharma is: meditating on Mahamudra and the profound emptiness of Dzogchen; and not meditating on anything, not conceptualizing anything, and so on. The wisdom accumulation that accords with the third turning of the wheel of Dharma is: meditating on the clear light that possesses all supreme aspects. These meditations are not mutually exclusive, but rather one is added on top of the other to meditate, isn't that so? Explanation of the View and Meditation of the Three Wheels of Dharma Similarly, the views that accord with these meditations are: the four seals, and seeing the infallibility of karmic results, and the view of the first turning of the wheel of Dharma; and observing and analyzing the phenomena of dependent origination in relative truth, discovering that they do not exist; and the view of emptiness; and the view of not conceptualizing anything, and so on, which is the view of the second turning of the wheel of Dharma; and not conceptualizing anything, seeing the clear light that possesses all supreme aspects.
