The Cloud of Offerings, a Ritual for the Sixteen Elders of the Sage, from the Great Treasure Trove TD2202. Activities for the Flourishing of the Teachings: Place Offering. The Cloud of Offerings, a Ritual for the Sixteen Elders of the Sage. Activities for the Flourishing of the Teachings: Place Offering. The Cloud of Offerings, a Ritual for the Sixteen Elders of the Sage. To the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the Sangha, To the Dharma, serene and free from attachment, To the supreme assembly of noble Sangha, We prostrate with reverence. To avert the danger of water to the Tsuklakang Temple (Rasa Trulnang) in Lhasa, the order of the ritual for the Sixteen Arhats is as follows: On a good foundation, whether with colored powders, painted cloth, or any kind of arrangement, construct a square mandala with four doors, surrounded by a garland of five-colored rays of light, with a sixteen-petaled lotus in the center. Around it, starting from the boundary-holding flower in the northeast, arrange the five objects of enjoyment, with two waters preceding them, in a circle. Also, arrange as many inconceivable offering items as possible. In front of that, place a torma, one for the lama and the Three Jewels, one for the assembly of the Sixteen Arhats, and one for the local deities, the six classes of beings, karmic debtors, and obstructing forces. All of these should be round, surrounded by four petals, and adorned with the three white and three sweet substances. Then, having cleansed and purified oneself, sit on a comfortable seat and visualize the refuge, the Three Jewels, and the assembly of the Sixteen Arhats vividly present in the sky in front. First, taking refuge: I and all sentient beings, as vast as the sky, go for refuge to the lama! I go for refuge to the Buddha! I go for refuge to the Dharma! I go for refuge to the Sangha! I go for refuge to the assembly of the Sixteen Great Arhats and their retinues! Second, generating the mind of enlightenment: To the Buddha, the Dharma, and the supreme Sangha, Until enlightenment, I take refuge. By the merit of my giving and so forth, May I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of beings. Generating the mind of enlightenment according to the Madhyamaka tradition: Teacher, King of the Shakyas, and all the victorious ones with their sons, Please consider me. I, named (so and so), until reaching the essence of enlightenment, Go for refuge to the Buddhas. Likewise, I go for refuge to the Dharma and the assembly of Bodhisattvas. Just as the Sugatas of the past, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generating the stage and the bodhisattva's precepts. As they abide in that order, may I also, for the benefit of beings, generate the bodhicitta and train in the bodhisattva's precepts in due order. Third, blessing the offerings: Purify with स्वाभाव (svabhāva) into emptiness. From within emptiness, from ཨཱོྃ་ (oṃ) arise vessels made of jewels, vast and extensive, within which, from the melting of ཨཱོྃ་ (oṃ), arise offerings made of divine substances: offering water, foot-washing water, flowers, incense, lamps, perfume, food, and also music, parasols, and so forth, clouds of offerings arising from the emanations of all noble Samantabhadra, pure and unobstructed, filling the entire expanse of space. ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་ཨརྒྷཾ་ ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ། (oṃ vajra arghaṃ āḥ hūṃ, Om Vajra Argham Ah Hum, Om Vajra Offering Water Ah Hum) ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་པུཥྤེ༴ (oṃ vajra puṣpe, Om Vajra Pushpe, Om Vajra Flower) ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་དྷཱུ་པེ༴ (oṃ vajra dhūpe, Om Vajra Dhupe, Om Vajra Incense) ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་ཨཱ་ལོ་ཀེ༴ (oṃ vajra āloke, Om Vajra Aloke, Om Vajra Light) ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་གནྡྷེ༴ (oṃ vajra gandhe, Om Vajra Gandhe, Om Vajra Perfume) ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་ནཻ་བིདྱཱ༴ (oṃ vajra naivedya, Om Vajra Naivedya, Om Vajra Food) ཨཱོྃ་ བཛྲ་ཤབྡ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ། (oṃ vajra śabda āḥ hūṃ, Om Vajra Shabda Ah Hum, Om Vajra Sound Ah Hum) Fourth, generating the celestial palace: Purify with स्वाभाव (svabhāva) into emptiness. From within emptiness, from བྷྲཱུྃ་ (bhrūṃ) arise a celestial palace made of various jewels, square with four doors, with steps, semi-lattices, and adorned with jeweled tops, surrounded on the outside by a garland of light rays. Within it, on a lotus and lunar seat in the center of a sixteen-petaled lotus, the perfectly complete Buddha, the Bhagavan, the Great Sage Shakyamuni, with a body like refined gold, the right hand in the earth-touching mudra and the left in the meditation mudra, seated in the vajra posture, wearing red monastic robes, with a smiling countenance, adorned with marks and signs, whose form is never satiating to behold, whose crown of the head is invisible and radiates immeasurable light, abiding in the form of a nirmanakaya. On the four white lotus petals in the east, in order, are: the great Arhat Rahula, with both hands in meditation and holding a hat; the great Arhat Nandha, with both hands in meditation; the great Arhat Bharadvaja, taking alms, the right hand holding a book and the left hand in meditation with a bowl on top; the great Arhat Kalodayin, the right hand holding a book and the left hand teaching the Dharma.
