Da Bao Fu Zang TD2058 'A Compilation of Thirteen Kinds of Life Ransom Rituals in the Style of Charming Vajra, A Life Fortress That Can Be Understood by Reading'. Extensive activities, Charming lineage. Homage to the King of Power! May the blessings and glory radiate like a sun of a million rays, May the rain of wish-fulfilling jewels of accomplishment fall as desired. May the activities as swift as lightning be accomplished as wished. I bow to the Three Roots deities, and pray for protection with joy and compassion! This is the support of the body, the basis of dwelling. It is the method of restoring the decline of life force. It possesses the blessings and glory of the accomplished ones' oral instructions. It is unerring and easy to take into hand. The thirteen kinds of life ransom rituals explained by the great accomplished master Charming Vajra contain three points: first, examining the life force; second, the method of remedy; and third, examining the signs. First, regarding situations where the life force wanders into enemy territory, enters a tomb, or is taken away by ghosts, if one dreams of oneself or others being naked, it is definitely a sign that the life force has been taken away. In addition, the elements turning hostile, encountering calamities, or experiencing mental confusion and waking up in fright at night are all signs of the life force wandering. One must not delay and must immediately strive to ransom the life force. Second, the methods of remedy are three: preparing offerings and performing consecration; the order of the formal ritual; and finally, the conclusion of the ritual. First is the preparation of offerings: In the room, according to one's own tradition, arrange the torma (Tibetan: གཏོར་མ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: बलि, Sanskrit Romanization: bali, Chinese literal meaning: food offering) and offerings to the yidam. If combined with longevity practices, arrange the mandala and longevity substances extensively in front or in a convenient place. On a platform or mat, draw a human figure with colored powders, making it lifelike, naked, lying supine, with arms and legs extended. Draw two circles around the figure, dividing the space between the circles into eight directions, representing east wood, south fire, west metal, north water, and the four corners representing earth. These are the locations of the eight trigrams, and according to calculation, they should be painted in green, red, white, blue, and yellow respectively. Outside the circles, draw a rectangle divided into eight directions, with the east painted white. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The colors of the directions: yellow for the south, red for the west, and green for the north. Any color can be chosen freely to universally represent these four directions. If pigments are not usually available, a figure can be drawn on cloth or paper with watercolors according to the diagram above. At the heart of the figure, place a effigy representing the male or female for whom the ritual is being performed, no smaller than four fingers wide. Make the effigy from materials mixed with camphor powder and precious medicines, making its reproductive organs distinct, painting it with colors, dressing it in worn clothes, and then covering it with fine sacrificial garments such as silk. In front of the effigy, place offerings including: peacock feathers, pearls, *ku ba* (a plant), gentian, silk, conch shells, cinnabar, antelope horns, stones, animal heart and kidneys, hands, crocodile claws, iron, copper, and various items such as food, medicine, clothing, silk, woolen fabrics, and grains, all prepared completely and in abundance. On the right, place southern items such as camphor and *Scutellaria baicalensis*; on the left, place northern items such as saltpeter and borax, all of which are produced in that particular region. In front and behind, place earth items such as salt flats, stones grown in the earth, and water items such as sand, garlic, onions, and bridge wood, all placed in precious containers. Place gold on the right hand and jade on the left. Behind, have an empty sky with harmonious colors and rainbow patterns. Also include arrows, bows, and slingshots. If it is a male, place a tiger-patterned amulet on the right shoulder; if it is a female, place a cow-patterned amulet on the left shoulder, with a diagram of the age drawn on it. These are the figures and offerings. Usually, to represent body, speech, and mind, three butter lamps are placed in front. There is also a tradition of using fresh sheep meat that has been specially slaughtered, is clean, and has no odor. If redeeming the life of a male, the meat from the right leg of the sheep is needed; if redeeming the life of a female, the meat from the left leg of the sheep is needed, which is a distinction. Whether male or female, place a life-sustaining jade and white barley grains corresponding to the age into the meat, wrapping it in clean white silk. Then wrap the meat in wool and clean white cloth, sealed with the patron's seal, and place it to the right of the ransom effigy if it is a male, and to the left if it is a female. It is very important to write the heart mantra of the *yidam* (Tibetan: ཡི་དམ་, Sanskrit: *iṣṭadevatā*, Romanization: ishtadevata, meaning: chosen deity) of a longevity ritual and a prayer for invoking life force on paper mixed with blessed substances, and wrap it around the back of the life-sustaining object with wool. It is said that the same should be done inside the ransom sheep. Finally, make twelve limbs on the body of the effigy: two legs, two thighs, two hands, two elbows, two shoulders, and upper and lower torso, totaling twelve, and add the head, making thirteen. Place a handful of *tsampa* (roasted barley flour) or dough on each of these parts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
