The Great Treasure Collection TD1425: 'Cutting Through the Single Seat Practice: Self-Liberation of Samsara and Nirvana' Cutting Through the Single Seat Practice, Instructions Om Swasti May there be well-being) From cutting the clinging to grasping and the grasped in the expanse, In the nature of non-grasping, free from elaboration, self-awareness of each, Eternally abiding, I prostrate to the feet of the kind guru. Then, I will elaborate on the profound essence of the Cutting Through practice. Here, the practice instructions of the Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom) are condensed into the essence, cutting the four māras in the expanse and taking conceptual thoughts as the path. The footsteps of the victorious lions among humans are the instructions of this Cutting Through practice. To practice this, there are three points: preliminary, main practice, and subsequent activity. First, the preliminary includes entering the Great Vehicle and receiving the blessings of devotion. The first point is mind training, including: recognizing the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment and the impermanence of life, thereby cutting attachment to this life and preparing for the next; recognizing the faults of samsara and the ways in which karmic results ripen, thereby cutting attachment to worldly pleasures and preparing for liberation; recognizing that the six realms of beings are all parents, thereby cutting attachment to self-interest with great love and compassion and preparing for the benefit of others. In particular, this leisure and endowment should be seen as a once-in-a-hundred-aeon opportunity, and based on this, experience should arise in the mind. The second point includes taking refuge and generating bodhicitta. First is taking refuge: the nature of samsara is suffering, like a pit of fire. The six realms of beings—our kind parents—are divided into enemies and friends, becoming objects of attachment and aversion, which is the root of downfall. Therefore, from this life until enlightenment, we should, like travelers in the same boat, like prisoners in the same jail, rely on the infallible protector—the Three Jewels—with a common goal and aspiration. After thinking in this way, visualize in the space in front, on a lion throne, lotus, sun, and moon cushion, sits Mācik Labdrön (藏文:མ་གཅིག་ལབ་ཀྱི་སྒྲོལ་མ་), inseparable from the root guru, she is the great mother, surrounded by the lineage gurus of the Kagyu (藏文:བཀའ་བརྒྱུད་) school, the Three Jewels, and all the objects of refuge, as dense as a cloud. Visualize yourself and all beings, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thinking that you know well the good and bad, In the realm of the sky, filling the sky, The assembly of lamas, yidams (本尊, इष्टदेवता, iṣṭadevatā, personal deity), and dakinis (空行母), And the Buddha, Dharma, and noble Sangha, I and all beings respectfully take refuge. Having taken refuge as much as possible, gather all the objects of refuge into the root lama. That itself dissolves into oneself, and rest evenly in the state of mind, awareness, and emptiness, inseparable, like the sky. Second, generating the mind of enlightenment: Clearly establish all sentient beings pervading space as the object. Thinking about how to make plans with them in the same way as before, may all these beings have temporary and ultimate happiness and the cause of happiness, and be free from suffering and the cause of suffering. May the happiness that has already been attained not diminish and increase. With such a good thought, without near or far, not just remaining in words, I will place these beings on the state of Buddhahood. For that purpose, I will practice this profound path. May all sentient beings have happiness, May they be free from all suffering, May they never be separated from happiness, May all beings realize equality. At the end of this, rest evenly in the state of the three circles without conceptualization, the ultimate bodhichitta. Second, bestowing blessings with devotion: Creating a support, accumulating the accumulations, and praying. First, if you are interested, the meditation sequence will be expanded as it appears elsewhere. Or, as before, clarify it. To summarize, establish the support in the very place where the refuge has not been gathered. Second, accumulating the accumulations: Arrange whatever is appropriate, such as the mandala (坛城) offering, the seven-branch offering, etc. Visualize all of your body, possessions, the three times, and the collection of virtues, etc., as the enjoyment of the five desires, arising as the objects of offering, the aspects of which fill the realms of the ten directions, arising from the play of wisdom. Offer with a mind free from grasping and attachment. 'The ground is anointed with incense water and strewn with flowers,' etc., and 'My body and possessions, and the virtuous things of the three times, for the sake of all sentient beings, I respectfully offer to you. Mother with eyes that see everything, you holy objects of offering, please be kind and think of me, and take and bless me.' Offer like this. Third, praying: As it says, 'The lama is the Buddha, the lama is the Dharma, likewise the lama is the Sangha, the lama is the doer of all,' recite with the mind that the lama is the essence of all the victorious ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
