The Common Preliminary Practices for All Dharmas from 'The Swift Path to Enlightenment in One Lifetime: The Very Essence of True Great Bliss,' Terma TD1050. Chöling Yangdröl. Treasure Text. The Common Preliminary Practices for All Dharmas from 'The Swift Path to Enlightenment in One Lifetime: The Very Essence of True Great Bliss.' Homage to glorious Heruka! Through 'The Swift Path to Enlightenment in One Lifetime: The Very Essence of True Great Bliss,' to accomplish the supreme siddhi of Mahamudra, there are three aspects: The common and uncommon preliminary practices for all dharmas; The main practice: the Mahamudra, the stages of instruction that directly reveal immaculate, self-luminous, pristine awareness; The subsequent practice: the pith instructions on integrating the path into everyday life. First, regarding the common path that precedes all dharmas, it includes the qualities of the lama and the student, the basis of the place for practice, the necessary equipment, and the dharma for engaging in the actual practice. Among these, first are the qualities of the lama: Those who should not be relied upon: those who are arrogant, ignorant, who merely follow words, who do not understand the meaning of secret mantra, who cut off the good of others, who are by nature angry, who have entered a wrong path, who have not seen the signs of the deity, who have broken their samaya, who are unable to cut through doubt, who have little learning—such unexamined teachers should not be relied upon. The qualities that make one worthy of reliance: those who are learned in the Dharma and detached from worldly affairs, who have seen the truth of emptiness and whose experience has reached its limit, who are not confused about the wishes of their students—one should rely on those who possess these qualities. Second, examining the vessel of the student: Those who should not become vessels: those who do not possess the three ways of serving the teacher, who behave in a way that violates secret mantra, who do not possess the lineage of the supreme vehicle, who have little wisdom, who despise kindness, who are meaningless and scattered. Those who possess the qualities of a vessel: those who have great faith and wisdom, whose minds are upright and without error, whose senses are clear, who are diligent, who have little attachment and are generous, who possess fortitude, who abide by their samaya. Third, the basis of the place for practice: A place that is agreeable to the mind and without harm, that is secluded from activity and where the land is auspicious. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One should practice in a place that possesses auspicious blessings, is not a local deity of the black faction, is blessed by past Buddhas, such as snow mountains, rocky mountains, cemeteries, islands, forests, etc., where the natural state of awareness is clear and the terrain is high, with low mountains in the east and west, overlapping front mountains, high back mountains with good observation, calm water, all favorable conditions are complete, and it is easy to accumulate gatherings. Fourth, the necessary items: Food and clothing to sustain the illusory body; samaya substances to rely on, such as the five meats and five amritas; necessary items, such as vajra and bell and mudras; harmonious items, such as medicine and auspicious substances; special items, such as torma offerings to please the dakinis, etc., should be gathered without omission. Fifth, the Dharma for generating conviction in actual practice: the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, the manner of its decay, the faults of samsara, and the acceptance and rejection of cause and effect. First, contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment: 'Leisure' has eight aspects, and 'endowment' has ten aspects. The three lower realms, namely hell, hungry ghosts, and animals; long-lived gods; even if born as humans, those in border regions, barbarians; those with incomplete faculties; and those with wrong views, these people do not have the leisure to practice the Dharma. Therefore, one is endowed with ten qualities: being born in a central land where the holy Dharma flourishes; having undamaged five senses; not following the inverted views of non-Buddhists; having faith in the Three Jewels; a Buddha has appeared in the world; He has taught the Dharma; the teachings abide; having a virtuous spiritual friend who teaches the Dharma; and others who are compassionate and loving towards oneself, having the leisure to practice the Dharma, obtaining such a precious human body is rarer than a star in daylight. Therefore, one should contemplate and examine from the aspects of cause, condition, essence, metaphor, and various categories, thereby possessing the wisdom to make this life meaningful. Second, the manner of its decay: contemplating the impermanence of death, first, the external world, including mountains and continents, initially forms, exists in the middle, and is ultimately destroyed by the three elements of fire, water, and wind; sentient beings are also like this, initially arising from the causes of parents, existing briefly in the middle like lightning and the sun, and ultimately dying, with nothing to rely on, hence it is impermanent; the changing of the four seasons, the rising and setting of the sun and moon, the differences between moments, etc.; and others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
