The Ritual for Averting Death, Called 'Subjugating the Army of the Lord of Death' from the Great Treasure Trove TD920 Written by Minling Gar Tshe The Ritual for Averting Death, Called 'Subjugating the Army of the Lord of Death' Written by Minling Gar Tshe The Ritual for Averting Death, Called 'Subjugating the Army of the Lord of Death' ཨ་མཱ་ར་སིདྡྷི་རསྟུ། (Tibetan) May immortality be attained! By the power of the ten strengths, the army of the Lord of Death is vanquished. With the nectar of immortal wisdom, the life force is extended. In the realm of Vajra, may it flourish. I prostrate to the Lord of Dance (Garwang Lha), and explain the ritual for averting the Lord of Death. Here, in connection with the ritual of Garwang Tsepakme (Lord of Dance, Amitayus), the ritual for averting death is performed. It will be explained for what purpose it is done, and how the ritual is performed. First is the examination of death, which is to examine signs and dreams. Examining signs is: suddenly the body's appearance and strength decline, losing radiance, the behavior of body, speech, and mind changes from before, the life-image weakens and becomes unclear, the movement of the winds becomes unbalanced, rough and agitated, the nasal breath mostly flows from the right side or flows equally from both sides, one becomes uneasy for no reason, and attachment and aversion towards objects become stronger than before, the mind becomes dull or reversed, and so on. Examining dreams is: dreaming of the sun and moon setting, becoming dark, walking alone unhappily towards the south, riding a donkey, camel, or buffalo, searching for a place to live, meeting the dead and eating and drinking with them, wearing clothes and garlands adorned with red, and so on, are mostly signs of death. Just as fruit comes from flowers, fire comes from smoke, and rain comes from clouds, signs of death appear before death arrives. Second is explaining how to avert death, which is divided into common aversion and special aversion. First is the common aversion: offering to the Three Jewels with whatever resources one has, performing Tsok Khor (feast gathering), Kong Shak (completion and confession), Jin Tong (generosity), erecting Sa Tsa (mound), Nieu Don (ransom), practicing Tse Drup (long life practice), and performing auspicious connections (Ten Drel), etc. As for the special methods of aversion, one should strive until the signs of averting death are seen. Second is the special aversion, which includes preparing the materials and explaining the order of the actual ritual. First is preparing the materials: to the south of the longevity mandala (Tse'i Kyilkhor) that is established, arrange the materials for this ritual. Mix ashes, black salt, and black mustard powder with black earth, add poison and blood liquids, and mold it into the image of the Lord of Death. (Tibetan,Devanagari,IAST,translation) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Visualize the deity) Its form is: black, holding a stick and a rope, with its mouth open, gnashing its teeth, with a terrifying expression, wearing human skin clothes and tiger skin skirts, etc., with frightening attire, its face slightly tilted downwards. The belly contains the cycle of the three realms. In the charnel ground, place the source of Dharma drawn with ashes of corpses below, and lay a black mat. In front of it, offer poisonous flowers, dried fish, lamps with a lot of grease, bile, black beans, and a lot of meat, which are the five offerings. In front of it, place ten kapala bowls, each containing ten portions of tsampa, decorated with fish, raw meat, lentils, blood, broth, garlic, onions, yogurt, ghee, brown sugar, etc., for a total of ten portions. And an iron pot to hold these foods. Wash the body or five senses of all those who need to practice with perfumed water that recites the mantra of action, and use tsampa mixed with various grain powders to make a substitute image that is one cubit high and complete with all organs, and place a blessed wheel of the four elements in its belly. Place five butter lamps on the top of the head and in the four directions. On the left and right shoulders, erect tiger and cowhide plaques with the judgment of the male and female lords of death written on them, and put on clothes and decorations, and place them on a clean base, covered with a cushion of kusha grass. Around it, arrange various treasures, grains, meat, ghee, brown sugar, medicines, silks, paints, and salt, etc., as funerary objects as available. Secondly, the ritual is divided into the practice of the root mandala and the special ritual. The first is the practice and offering of the root mandala, starting from the preliminary torma, until the summoning of life merges, the life-extending ritual that pours down like rain, and the worldly and transcendental tormas that need to be offered, and if a tsog offering is to be made, it should also be done here. The second is the special ritual, which is divided into nine parts. First, blessing the substances: Through རྃ་ཡྃ་ཁྃ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari, ram yam kham, Romanized Sanskrit, ram yam kham, destroy, wind, space) burn, destroy, and purify all impure substantial grasps, making them emptiness. From emptiness, from ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ་སྭཱ་ཧཱ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari, om ah hum svaha, Romanized Sanskrit, om ah hum svaha, Om Ah Hum Svaha) arise endless desires, all the necessary items are available, and the harmonious collection of materials is enriched with nine kinds of beauty and increased with nine kinds of joy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
