If people and materials are not properly prepared, contemplate the protection wheel as it is part of the journey. If it happens later than it should, it is defiled, so recite the Hundred Syllable Mantra extensively. If those items are usable, do not consume them before they expire. In general, be relaxed at the beginning of the retreat, strict in the middle, and relaxed afterward. Whenever thoughts of the three poisons of desire, anger, and ignorance, whether large or small, arise like ripples in water, seize those sudden thoughts with mindfulness. In a state of non-distraction, focus the mind on the sound of the deity and mantra. If various situations such as happiness, suffering, high, and low arise, release them without attachment. From the beginning of the retreat until its completion, do not cut hair or nails, do not wash hands or face, do not shake the cushion, and maintain the warmth of the cushion. After the retreat, first meet with one or two people who uphold pure vows. Then gradually widen the circle, allowing contact with defilements and habits is important. By diligently practicing in this way, one will surely become a great and fearless master in accomplishing the boundless activities of the Vajrayana. Manjushri Vajra ('jam dpal rdo rje, Manjushri Vajra) is the dance of wisdom's illusion, fiercely wrathful to destroy the unbearable armies of demons. The Blood Drinker (khag 'thung) is the mudra of all phenomena, samsara and nirvana, stability and impermanence. Subduing all, the great splendor, Lord of Kalachakra (dus kyi dgra)! The accomplishments you grant, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, effortlessly achieved, are a swift and blissful gift. May the mantra holders of the degenerate age, with great diligence, transform weariness into a gift of rest. Here, the method of practice from the root scripture, and the key points of many infallible instructions, may the merit and wisdom gained from this discourse merge into the vast ocean! This practice manual for Manjushri Yamantaka ('jam dpal gshin rje'i gshed), the subduer of arrogance, called 'The Wish-Fulfilling Vase,' was written by Gyalkhampa Gyurme Dorje ('gyur med rdo rje) at the royal palace of Ribotala (ri bo po ta la) in U-Tsang (dbus), in response to the long-standing request of his younger brother, the translator Ngawang Chöpal (ngag dbang chos dpal), in order to make it meaningful. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
