Great Treasure Collection TD631: 'The Vase of Wishes, A Practice Manual of Yamantaka Manjushri'. Written by Minling Terchen. Homage to the Guru and Manjushri Vajrakrodha, the King of Blood Drinkers, inseparable. Here, a mantra practitioner who has received empowerment and abides by the vows, wishing to practice the Manjushri Yamantaka who subdues arrogance, should first choose a secluded and agreeable place, free from harm from enemies and thieves, and away from unsuitable vessels, distractions, and disturbances. At an auspicious time with good astrological conjunctions during the waxing moon of any month, gather all necessary materials, such as offerings, tormas, and double the amount of food and drink. Rely on like-minded friends who are gentle in conduct and pure in vows, who will assist in the practice without weariness. Vow not to leave this seat until the practice is completed, and avoid impatience or lack of determination by setting a deadline for completion. If communication with people or exchange of materials is necessary, keep them outside the boundary from the beginning, as bringing them inside will cause the boundary to be broken. Therefore, entering the boundary with these considerations is the preliminary practice. The main practice consists of two parts: peaceful practice and wrathful accomplishment. First, the peaceful practice: Place a painted or sculpted image of Manjushri in front of you. On a clean platform in front of it, arrange a round torma decorated with ornaments made of tsampa (roasted barley flour) and other white and sweet substances, as well as general and specific protector tormas with medicine and alcohol. Arrange clean and pure offerings such as water, incense, and other offerings. Sit in the posture of facing the deity or facing south on a comfortable cushion with an inner lining, with a swastika (藏文,卍,Yungdrung, auspicious symbol) and dharma wheel drawn with white earth or rice underneath. Place a vajra, bell, damaru, inner offering skull cup, and flower container on the right or in front. Also, arrange all the necessary items for the tsok (gathering) and other items needed for this occasion in a complete and comfortable manner. Then, the essence of the practice is to proceed through the four sessions of yoga in sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When practicing, start from the evening session of the first day. First, sit on a comfortable seat, and by simply reciting 'ཨྱཻ། ཨེ་ཉིད་སྟོང་པ་' (Tibetan), instantly generate and stabilize the pride of Yamari (Gshin rje gshed po, the subduer of Yama). According to the ritual, offer the Torma (gtor ma, sacrificial cake) to the earth deities and obstructors, and finally recite the mantra, driving them away with white mustard seeds. Burn Gugul incense (gu gul, a type of incense) etc., and be very serious about it. Pile up stones at the door, visualize and offer to the Four Great Kings, requesting them to protect, dispel obstacles, and remain here. Then, visualize yourself as Yamari, from the 'ཧཱུྃ' (Tibetan, Devanagari: हूँ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, seed syllable, representing wisdom) syllable at your heart, radiate light in ten directions. Visualize a burning ten-spoked wheel, with the tips of the spokes pointing upwards, downwards, and in the four cardinal and four intermediate directions. Inside the hub, at the tip of each spoke, are the Ten Directional Protectors (phyogs skyong bcu, ten directional guardian deities) and their respective solar seats. On each solar seat sits a black 'ཧཱུྃ' (Tibetan, Devanagari: हूँ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, seed syllable, representing wisdom) syllable, which manifests as ten black wrathful deities, holding mallets and iron hooks, fearsome and blazing. Inside the wheel is a vast and boundless tent of sunlight and moonlight of skillful means and wisdom, made of vowels and consonants (རྒྱུ་ཨཱ་ལི་ཀཱ་ལི་, རྒྱུ་ refers to cause, origin, ཨཱ་ལི་ཀཱ་ལི་ refers to vowels and consonants), without any gaps. Outside the wheel, the ground is covered with Vajra ground, surrounded by an upright Vajra fence. Around the outside of the fence, it is bound by a Vajra chain net. Above, a circular Vajra tent is covered, and outside the tent hang dense Vajra garlands. The top is decorated with a Vajra pinnacle. All gaps are filled with Vajra filaments, without any space. Inside, a Vajra banner like an umbrella is erected. Outside of that, surround with swords, bows and arrows, spears, phurbas, etc., all kinds of sharp and cutting weapons, with their tips pointing outwards. Finally, visualize the fire of wisdom in five colors, burning fiercely like the fire at the end of an eon, with sparks flying, from which emanate wrathful deities and weapons like stars. Visualize them burning and reducing to ashes all obstacles and demonic forces, pervading all directions. Focus single-mindedly on this visualization, and recite: 'ཧཱུྃ༔ ང་ནི་འཇམ་དཔལ་གཤིན་རྗེའི་གཤེད༔' (Tibetan, Hūṃ! I am Manjushri Yamari) etc., until 'ཨོཾ་མ་ཧཱ་ཀྲོ་དྷ་རཀྵ་ཛྭ་ལ་རཾ་ཧཱུྃ་ཕཊ༔' (Tibetan, Devanagari: ॐ महाक्रोध रक्ष ज्वाला रं हूँ फट्, Romanized Sanskrit: oṃ mahākrodha rakṣa jvāla raṃ hūṃ phaṭ, Great Wrathful One, Protect, Flame, Burn, Hūṃ, Phaṭ). This protection wheel should not be removed until the end of the retreat, and it should be clearly visualized at the beginning of each session to prevent obstacles, which is very important. Then, contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, impermanence of death, the law of karma, refuge and bodhicitta, the seven-branch prayer, etc., making sure that these contents truly integrate into your mind, not just reciting them verbally, as if practicing shamatha. Then, recite the mantra of emptiness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
