Compose the Five Essential Nails of the Jewel: First is refuge and generating bodhicitta: I and all sentient beings of the three realms, Turning away from the wrong path, Take refuge in the Three Jewels. For the sake of liberation from the suffering caused by afflictions, Generate the mind of enlightenment. In the sky above my crown, Upon a seat of sun, moon, and lotus, The Lama, full of splendor and radiance, Adorned with beautiful garments, Imagine with a smiling face and glowing countenance. In the eastern sky in front, The mandala of all the Yidam deities, Beginning with Shakya Simha (Śākyasiṃha, Shakyamuni Buddha), Imagine as pure and clear in five colors. In the south, the speech of the Sugatas, In the form of scriptures and letters, Imagine as encompassing all the sacred Dharma. In the west, the assembly of Bodhisattvas, Imagine as the three protectors, Avalokiteśvara, Manjushri, and Vajrapani, as well as Maitreya, Performing all deeds for the benefit of beings. In the north, the protectors of the sacred Dharma, The Dharma protectors, oath-bound ones, and vidyadharas, Imagine as obedient messengers. Below, all sentient beings of the six realms, Gathered together with a mind of compassion, Generate a feeling of regret for actions, And take refuge with one-pointed devotion: Alas! All sentient beings wandering in the three realms of samsara, Take refuge in the unsurpassed Three Jewels! Purify the evil deeds obscured by the darkness of ignorance, Pray to be shown the self-nature of pure wisdom. I and all sentient beings of the six realms, Until enlightenment is attained, please look upon us with compassion! The source of all qualities, the place of supreme accomplishment, Take refuge in the precious Lama! Subduing in various ways, performing deeds for the benefit of beings, Take refuge in the mandala of Yidam deities! Letters emanated from the speech of the Buddha, The Dharma that destroys afflictions, take refuge in the Dharma! The powerful ones who perform great deeds for the benefit of beings with great compassion, Take refuge in the assembly of Bodhisattvas! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I take refuge in all of you! I take refuge in the Dharma protectors and oath-bound ones who manifest in wrathful forms for the sake of taming beings! By the merit I have accumulated in the three times, may all beings attain supreme enlightenment! May the self-born wisdom, the naturally arising Dharmakaya, be quickly realized! From this life onwards, may I become a guide leading beings through lifetimes! Those of superior, middling, or inferior faculties should, in stages, engage in taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta for three, five, or seven days. Secondly, the liberation of self-grasping is for the sake of accumulating the two accumulations of merit. Whatever food and enjoyment one possesses, along with all stinginess and affection, should be offered to the Sugatas and given in charity. Offer both actually possessed and mentally emanated outer, inner, and secret mandalas. Namo! In the center of the great powerful palace, Mount Meru stands majestic and dignified. Surrounded by the seven golden mountains and the seven playful oceans, it possesses soft, pliable, sturdy, and precious walls. The four continents and eight subcontinents encircle the directions, filled with the desirable qualities of gods and humans. The light of the sun and moon dispels the darkness of the world. The iron fence perfectly surrounds it from the outside. This outer appearance of the vessel world, I offer with reverence to the supreme Three Jewels. May I and others perfect the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, and quickly realize the true essence! The inner mandala: Namo! In the Bardo (intermediate state) assembled by worldly karma, that which I hold most dear with my mind, including land, enjoyment, and the realm of desire. Loving parents, friendly companions, and so on, surrounded by children and cherished retinues. Possessing food, wealth, clothing, utensils, and ornaments, with radiant and beautiful colors and inherent light. That which is held dear by the grasping mind, all that I cherish in this world, I offer to Guru (teacher), Ratna (jewel), the incarnate body. May I be purified from the objects of my afflictive emotions, and may you reveal the pure, self-abiding wisdom! Offering the secret mandala: Hum! In the palace of my own body, composed of the four elements, in the dwelling place of the mind, the Citta (mind) blazes. The five sense faculties serve as surrounding supports. The eight consciousnesses completely encircle it like a retinue. Possessing flesh, blood, bones, and various internal organs. The two eyes dispel darkness with clear light. This illusory body, rich in enjoyment, I offer to the Lama (guru) who reveals the definitive meaning. May all the illusions on my path be purified, and may I realize self-aware wisdom! Third, the peg of confession for purifying obscurations: The obscurations of karma have not yet... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
