The preliminary practice of the common part of the great perfection of the complete teachings, the profound and subtle union of all precious things (bka' rdzogs pa chen po yang zab dkon mchog spyi 'dus), is called such. Rainbow Union. Preliminary Practice. The preliminary practice of the common part of the great perfection of the complete teachings, the profound and subtle union of all precious things, is called such. The combination of the four preliminary practices: contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity (dal 'byor), impermanence of death ('chi ba mi rtag pa), the law of karma (las rgyu 'bras), and the suffering of samsara ('khor ba'i sdug bsngal). First, this precious human body of leisure and opportunity is extremely difficult to find. As Shantideva (zhi ba lha) said: 'This leisure is extremely difficult to find; having obtained it, one should accomplish its purpose. If one does not accomplish benefit from it now, how will one obtain it again in the future?' The eight leisures are as follows: From the Sutra of Gathering: 'By abandoning the eight unfree states, one always finds leisure.' From the Sutra of Mindfulness (mdo dran pa nyer gzhag): 'The hells, the pretas, and the animals; the barbarians, the long-lived gods; the wrong views, those without a Buddha; the mutes—these are the eight unfree states.' How are these unfree? The hells are always of the nature of suffering; the pretas are of the nature of miserliness; the animals are always of great ignorance; all three of these are without shame and without embarrassment, so their minds are untamed. Therefore, there is no opportunity to practice the Dharma. The so-called long-lived gods are attached to the pleasure of their abode and do not strive for virtue. Thus, it is taught that the six realms of beings have no leisure. Even if one is born as a human, it is difficult for barbarians to encounter holy beings. Those with wrong views do not see virtue as the cause of higher realms and liberation. To be born in a world devoid of Buddhas means that there is no one to show what should and should not be done. The mute cannot know for themselves the Dharma of good and bad teachings. Thus, to be free from these eight is called perfect leisure and opportunity. Opportunity ( 'byor pa) is the five opportunities of oneself and the five opportunities of others, making ten. The five opportunities of oneself are as follows: 'To be human, born in the central lands, with complete faculties, not having reversed one's karma, and having faith in the Dharma.' To be human means to share the same fortune as humans. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
