Great Treasure of the Supreme (大寶伏藏) TD124 Instructions on the Guru Yoga 'Shower of Blessings' Guru Yoga, According to the Minling Tradition Instructions on the Guru Yoga 'Shower of Blessings' Oṃ Svasti: Lord of the four kāyas (身,body) , the unchanging great bliss, The very form of the compassion of all the buddhas pervading space. Emanating in various dances as the vajra guru (金刚上师), May the lotus feet of the all-pervading guru adorn my crown. When the compassionate clouds gather in the all-encompassing sky, And the great drum of devotion is sounded to invoke them, Then, may the unsurpassable shower of blessings, Fall as a spring of nectar for the fortunate ones. May this be auspicious! Here, to clarify the essential instructions for practicing the profound path of guru yoga, there are three stages: preliminaries, main practice, and concluding activities. First, the preliminaries: As the son of the victorious ones, Śāntideva (寂天菩萨), said: 'This leisure and opportunity is extremely difficult to find. Having achieved the accomplishment of human life, If we do not accomplish benefit from this, How will we ever attain this perfect opportunity again?' Therefore, since we have found this fully endowed support, rich with the eight freedoms and ten endowments, we must genuinely engage in the true Dharma from the depths of our hearts. Otherwise, this support of leisure and opportunity is extremely difficult to find. Furthermore, since death is impermanent and we do not know when we will die, it is important not to procrastinate or be lazy, but to cultivate great diligence in the sacred Dharma from today onwards. As it is said: 'The three realms are impermanent, like autumn clouds. The birth and death of beings is like watching a dance. The life of beings is like a flash of lightning in the sky. It goes swiftly, like a waterfall down a steep mountain.' Therefore, at the time of death, all wealth, possessions, relatives, and so forth must be left behind, and one goes alone, like pulling a hair from butter. At that time, the only thing that follows is karma. As it says: 'When the time comes for the king to depart, Enjoyment, friends, and relatives do not follow. Wherever beings go, wherever they go, Karma follows like a shadow.' Then, reflecting on the way in which white and black karma ripen, one must be careful not to err in even the smallest details of what to accept and reject in terms of cause and effect. This is because the fruits of happiness and suffering ripen separately, without being mixed. As for how they ripen: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the three non-virtues of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, both great, medium, and small, one is thrown into the three lower realms as a result. Due to the virtue that accords with merit, one is propelled into the happy realms. At that time, one experiences the suffering of the hot and cold hells, the hunger and thirst of the pretas, the stupidity, muteness, and exploitation of animals, the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death of humans, the fighting of asuras, and the suffering of the gods' death, transference, and falling. Until the root of samsara is uprooted, one repeatedly revolves in the six realms. As it is said: 'Beings, under the power of craving, existence, and ignorance (藏文:མ་རིག་,梵文天城体:अविद्या,梵文罗马拟音:avidyā,English literal meaning: ignorance), ignorantly revolve in the five realms of humans, gods, and the three lower realms, like a potter's wheel. The three realms blaze with the suffering of aging and sickness. Here, the fire of death blazes fiercely, without a protector. Born from existence, beings are always ignorant, like a bee trapped in a jar.' Therefore, since one cannot liberate oneself from the suffering of samsara by one's own power, one must take refuge in the Three Jewels, which can protect us from it. As the great accomplished Melong said: 'To the incomparable refuge, serve with all your heart, mind, and soul. May it unfailingly accomplish whatever is desired.' How does one take refuge? In a secluded place, sit upright on a comfortable cushion. As mentioned above, first train the mind. In the space in front, visualize the refuge field—the gurus, vidyadharas, and buddhas gathered like a sea, dense like a cloud. From this time until attaining the essence of enlightenment, all the good and bad, joy and sorrow, hope and reliance of myself and all beings are only you. Please do as you see fit. From the depths of your heart, recite: Namo! (藏文:ན་མོ།,梵文天城体:नमः,梵文罗马拟音:namah,English literal meaning: I take refuge) I and all beings as vast as space take refuge in the Sugatas, the Buddhas and their sons, in all directions and times! From this day until I attain enlightenment, I will always take refuge with reverence through the three doors! Recite this hundreds or thousands of times, up to three times. Finally, rays of light emanate from the bodies of the refuge field, leading all sentient beings to pure lands. The refuge field dissolves into light and merges into oneself. Remain in a state where oneself and the refuge field are inseparable, and then rest as you are. This is the foundation of the path of all vehicles—taking refuge. Then, generate the root of the Great Vehicle—supreme bodhicitta. As Shantideva said: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
