Collected Teachings of Tāranātha JT368: A Brief, Clear, Pure, and Complete Treatise Called "The Gateway to Definitive Meaning, Distinguishing the Two Systems." 18-169 ༄༅། །A Brief, Clear, Pure, and Complete Treatise Called "The Gateway to Definitive Meaning, Distinguishing the Two Systems." ༄༅། །A Brief, Clear, Pure, and Complete Treatise Called "The Gateway to Definitive Meaning, Distinguishing the Two Systems." ༄༅། །Oṃ Svasti! Regarding the present context, within the Great Vehicle, there are two systems: the treatises of the Yogācāra school, such as those by the venerable Maitreya, the noble Asaṅga and Vasubandhu brothers, Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, and others who propound the Mind-Only school, along with the intent of the scriptures of the final turning of the wheel of Dharma, such as the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra; and the intent of the collections of reasoning of the Madhyamaka school of the teacher, the noble Nāgārjuna, which propounds the emptiness of inherent existence, along with the views of Buddhapālita, Bhāviveka, Candrakīrti, and others, which are the actual teachings of the intermediate turning of the wheel of Dharma. Among these, in Tibet, those who uphold the Madhyamaka school of self-emptiness, which is widely known as the Madhyamaka of emptiness of inherent existence, call the former system the Mind-Only school and the latter the Madhyamaka school. Those who are widely known as proponents of other-emptiness, who consider the sūtras of the final turning of the wheel of Dharma to be ultimately definitive, call the latter system generally the Madhyamaka school, but say that there are two kinds of definitive meaning in Madhyamaka: temporary and ultimate. This is the temporary definitive meaning. The former system considers the temporary tenet to be the establishment of other-powered phenomena as truly existent. Furthermore, the tenets of the system that asserts phenomena to be true are Mind-Only. The tenet that teaches that all phenomena included in the imputed and the other-powered, along with the apprehended and the apprehender, are not truly existent, and that the non-dual wisdom of the perfectly established is truly existent, is what Tibetans and others call the Mind-Only of mere appearance. This is the Great Madhyamaka of ultimate definitive meaning. Therefore, the proponents of self-emptiness consider the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wheel of the four noble truths, to be provisional; the intermediate turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wheel of signlessness, to be ultimately definitive; and the final turning to be that which is well distinguished.

It is considered that the Dharma wheel is a temporary meaning, that is, a guiding meaning. However, the proponents of the Shentong (gzhan stong) school believe that the first is the guiding meaning, the middle is the temporary meaning, and the last is the ultimate meaning. That is to say, the first turning of the Dharma wheel is the common vehicle of the Shravakas and the Vinaya Pitaka, so it is said that all the conventional dharmas exist. In the middle, in the Prajnaparamita Sutras, all dharmas from form to omniscience are said to be without self-nature, and there is not even a particle of existing dharma. Finally, the ultimate true reality seen by the wisdom of the noble ones, the indivisibility of the realm and wisdom, is because the essence has not changed since the beginning. Therefore, this constant and unchanging thing truly exists. And non-existent things, as well as objects such as form, sense organs such as eyes, mind and mental factors, that is, the eight consciousness aggregates, fifty-one mental factors, etc., which are all included in the grasped and the grasper, are only transformations of that ultimate truth, like images in a mirror, which have not arisen since the beginning, so they are said to be unreal. Therefore, in the "Samdhinirmocana Sutra," it is said that the first turning of the Dharma wheel is for those who enter the Shravaka vehicle, the middle turning is for those who enter the Mahayana vehicle, and the last turning is for those who enter various vehicles. The first and middle turnings are supreme, have occasions, and become the basis for arguing about the guiding meaning; while the last turning is not supreme, has no occasion, and is not the basis for arguing about the definitive meaning. In addition, the middle turning of the Dharma wheel says that all dharmas are without self-nature, which is said because it is intended to apply the three types of selflessness to the three: the completely imputed, the other-dependent, and the thoroughly established. It is not intended to mean that there is absolutely no truly existing dharma. And, "The consciousness of taking form is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a stream, it is not reasonable to grasp at self, this I have not shown to children." In this way, after saying that everything exists in the first turning of the Dharma wheel, it is immediately said that this ultimate truth truly exists, because sentient beings have the habit of clinging to self from the beginning, and because of the causes related to this, there is a possibility of clinging to the self of a person. Therefore, in the middle turning of the Dharma wheel, it is not said that this uncontaminated realm exists, but it says...
