This is a commentary on the Second Chapter. Eight Faults and the Dharma that Eliminates Them. This is a commentary on the Second Chapter. Homage to the Lama. The Dharani of the Second Chapter is taught through four condensed meanings: the eight faults and the Dharma that eliminates them, the form mantra, and its benefits. The first is, "Having contempt for the Buddha and the Dharma," etc. This does not arise from the Hinayana Pitaka, but from the Mahayana. Many sutra words and meanings seem contradictory but are not, and these are spoken to eliminate these eight faults. If we explain each with examples, for the purpose of eliminating contempt for the Buddhas of the past, it is said that the lifespan and pure land of the Tathagata Vipashyin, and the perfection of the retinue, are immeasurable. If one thinks that the teacher Shakyamuni is very small, for the purpose of eliminating this contempt, it is said, "At that time, at that moment, I myself became the perfectly enlightened Buddha called Vipashyin." Like that, it is in the manner of the past body following. Whether it is different or the same, it is the same. Once the Buddha has attained it, he contemplates that all are of one essence. Like the water of the Ganges also merges into the great ocean, like saying, "This ocean is also the Ganges and also the Indus," it is contemplating equality. Contempt for the Dharma is thinking that the twelve branches of scripture or the three pitakas are common because even outcastes and women can hear them, and that they are easy to obtain and have faults. To that, the Dharma spoken by the Tathagata is the antidote to all afflictions and suffering, and the cause of all wisdom and happiness. Therefore, as it is said, "If one serves and honors as many Tathagatas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, then the knowledge of the Mahayana will arise." It is taught that it is very difficult to obtain because it must be accomplished from immeasurable perfect causes. In general, just the Dharma, and especially just hearing the Dharma of the Mahayana, is very difficult to obtain.

Ah, that is certainly so. However, the reason for saying it that way is that the disciples at that time understood that only that much cause was needed for the arising of wisdom from hearing the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. Thus, they would abandon contempt for the Dharma and become respectful. But in reality, merely the wisdom of not hearing is not completely pure wisdom. Therefore, it was considered that only that much cause was needed for the arising of wisdom that directly realizes the meaning of the Great Vehicle. That is certain, it is considered that from accumulating merit in countless eons, the wisdom of the path of seeing will arise. Laziness is, relying on causes such as distraction, discouragement, laziness, and attachment to desires, one does not like or strive for virtue. As an antidote to this, merely reciting the name of the Tathagata Ratnaketu will definitely lead to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. It is like speaking in this way to generate joy. Therefore, even the lazy person will think that this place is not so difficult. Then immediately they will engage in reciting the name of the Buddha Ratnaketu. Although it is not certain that they will attain great enlightenment at that very moment, relying on the merit of reciting the name, it will be realized in the future. It is like saying that from this seed, this harvest will come. Holding that a little is enough means that giving, discipline, or meditation, just practicing a little bit, one thinks that nothing else is needed. Regarding this, even to accomplish a pore of the Tathagata, one needs immeasurable virtue like the ocean. So how can that be obtained through laziness? Thus it is said, exhorting to accomplish all the accumulations of merit and wisdom. This one and the previous one seem contradictory, but they are not. Relying on the small, through gradual succession, one can eventually accomplish great meaning. And that for immediately or directly accomplishing great meaning, it is necessary to have already accumulated many causes and resources, these two are not contradictory. Similarly, sometimes giving is highly praised, and sometimes giving is disparaged and discipline is praised, etc., through various methods, it depends on the thoughts of the disciples, so it is not contradictory. When it becomes an antidote to stinginess, giving is especially able to be generous, while discipline etc.
