Collected Teachings of Dolonatha JT303: The Source of Benefit and Happiness, a Gradual Path for Beginners 14-265 ༄༅། །The Source of Benefit and Happiness, a Gradual Path for Beginners ༄༅། །The Source of Benefit and Happiness, a Gradual Path for Beginners Sanskrit Romanization, oṃ svasti prajābhyaḥ, Literal Chinese Meaning, May all be well) After paying homage to the Lama, the embodiment of all refuges, and the Three Jewels with reverence, I will briefly explain the stages of practice for the benefit of beginners. Those who are new to practice should primarily learn the practice sequence for one full day and night. When the body and mind have become somewhat workable, they should diligently engage in listening, contemplation, and meditation. By doing so, they will attain excellent qualities. So, what does the practice of one full day and night look like? It is based on diligently keeping the vows one has taken as the core. During the latter part of the night, one should abandon sleep, drowsiness, and laziness. With the body in the correct posture and the mind unscattered, one should generate faith by recalling the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, generosity, ethics, and deities. One should develop a definite sense of renunciation towards this life and samsara, and keep in mind the nature and benefits of the path to liberation. One should strongly cultivate love, compassion, and bodhicitta towards all sentient beings. If one has received instructions, one should meditate a little. Then, when the first rays of dawn appear, one should perform the elaborate seven-branch practice, including prostrations. At the beginning of the day, one should engage in whatever session practice one can accomplish, such as prostrations, offering, giving tormas, reading sutras, or circumambulating stupas. Then, one should engage in the activity of eating, continuously offering the first portion and leftovers, etc. After that, with a clean body and mind, preceded by the seven-branch practice, one should engage in reading, listening to Dharma, or meditation, whichever is appropriate. In the afternoon, to dispel fatigue, one should rejoice with Dharma-related talks. Then, one should engage in various session practices, such as making tsatsas. In the evening session, preceded by prostrations, one should make offerings to the noble ones and extensive torma offerings to the spirits. 14-266 Through the gateway of prostrations, make offerings to the noble ones and vast tormas to the spirits.
