In the state of unceasing awareness and emptiness within one's own nature, one should naturally recognize the mind. Whatever thoughts and appearances of objects arise, from the very moment they arise, one should rely on recognizing the nature of that appearance, thereby spontaneously recognizing the thoughts. As it is said in the tantras: "If you examine the goodness and falsehood of things, you will truly see the false vajra, that alone is the pure essence of self." Thirdly, to enhance through the special means of dharani, and to enhance through subduing demons. The first is that although many methods are mentioned in the tantras, in the pith instructions, these nine methods are practiced. The first is: "'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A) is called the door of the unborn dharani." The meaning of this is that in the state of abiding in the main practice of yoga, focus the mind on the heart center of the body, contemplate a sound called 'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), and analyze its nature. Such a sound does not appear in the objects of the five senses, and it is not present anywhere inside or outside the body, so it is separate from all grasping, and it appears clearly and uninterruptedly in the mind. Carefully observe and analyze it, and abide in the realm of selflessness. Verbally recite 'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), and see if there is any connection between that sound and the general sound of 'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A) that was previously contemplated in the mind. Even if you think of something else in your mind, you can still verbally recite 'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), and even while thinking of the general sound of the letter 'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), you can see other verbal expressions arising, so conclude that these two are not connected, and then repeatedly abide. Because 'A' (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A) is the root of all letters, by knowing that its sound and meaning are without self-nature, one will realize that all speech is sound-emptiness. If you are still not sure with just that, then establish it on other names and meanings, such as the name "Devadatta." Think of any name of a nature in your mind, and for the thought that appears as the totality of words, determine that it does not exist in meaning as it appears, as before. Determine that it also has no connection with what is verbally spoken, as before. It does not appear that these two, the sound and the thought, have any connection with one's own body and mind. If there were a connection between them, then the form of that thing should appear only from that name, but for that thing, many other names can be used.
