The Commentary on the Essence of the Four Mudras. The Commentary on the Essence of the Four Mudras. The Commentary on the Essence of the Four Mudras. Oṃ Svasti! The secret treasury of the minds of all Buddhas, the co-emergent hidden in the ocean of tantras, having taken the jewel, bestow it upon the unprotected beings, may the venerable lama protect me! This instruction called "The Essence of the Four Mudras," from which lineage does it originate? It is said that Dharmapāla, born into a Brahmin family in the land of glorious Oḍḍiyāna, committed four sins in one session in the land of Oḍiśa, and repented. He relied on the feet of the teacher Jālandhara, and having taken the essence of the instructions, practiced for six months in the land of Koṅkaṇa. Vajrayoginī actually showed her face, and having attained the supreme accomplishment, he then wandered in various countries with the behavior of a madman. Judging by his external behavior, people called him Virūpa, that is, one with a bad nature. This great being gave it to the teacher Vyādali. This was a bird hunter by caste. Relying on the virtuous friend Neco, by relying on Virūpa, he was given the instructions of the four mudras. Practicing a little, when his mind was distracted by the work of hunting, he fashioned the shape of birds from clay and zan, cut their throats and meditated. After some time, he attained the supreme accomplishment, and having gone to the cities, he showed the ability to kill and revive various kinds of birds, and his name became known as such. This teacher initiated a yogi named Asitaghaṇa, and having spoken these three verses of the essence of the four mudras, he made him meditate. Before long, all the signs appeared. Then, having trained the continuum with all the instructions, after some time, he said "Are," and as soon as he spoke, it is said that he also attained accomplishment. He gave it to Ratigupta, he gave it to Śāntigupta, he gave it to my lama. Among them, these three vajra word ślokas, which are more essential than the essential meaning of the tantra, show the method of meditation in a few words. The first verse is a summary, the second is the nature of what is to be meditated upon.
