Furthermore, the three letters of the Lama's three places (body, speech, and mind), each individually and all three together, the rays of light dissolve into oneself, as the four empowerments, there is also the great essential point of the blessings of body, speech, and mind entering. It is just like the four empowerments and the Dharma. It is not the actual empowerment ritual. The Lama dissolves into light. Spreading to the four places, such as the brow, thinking that one has obtained the four empowerments, although it is not the actual empowerment, it is important for purifying the defilements of one's body, speech, and mind. Bestowing the blessing of arising of the four joys, therefore there is praise for meditating on bliss and emptiness. The small booklet of Lama Yoga, this is the first part. Auspiciousness! Atisha! Namo Gurave. For practicing the path, shamatha and vipassanā are very important. For shamatha, there are nine ways of abiding the mind. Relying on the eight activities of abandoning the five faults.

In terms of Shamatha (calm abiding), it requires a state of single-pointed concentration without the movement of discursive thoughts; in terms of Vipassana (insight), it requires a view that transcends all elaborations, not just understanding, but a realization that produces experience. If this is not achieved, then from the point where the mind abides in a rough boundary, introduce the cutting-off-the-root method. Except for a few individuals with excellent faculties, most will fall into the meditation methods of Bon and Chinese Mahayana, which are even lower than the higher samadhi of the tirthikas (non-Buddhists). If there is a pure Shamatha-Vipassana, then without abandoning that state, taking whatever arises without alteration as the path, this forceful introduction is an extremely profound instruction, the tradition of the great accomplished ones. Generally, good Shamatha-Vipassana is common, even if one meditates on life-pellets, it will come to have various increases and decreases depending on conditions. If one grasps it with this method of taking whatever arises without alteration as the path, then a state that is not changed by any condition will be immediately accomplished. At that point, one has truly cut the root. Some do not need to go on the path of Shamatha-Vipassana; nowadays, the swift path of Mahamudra is prevalent. Some accomplished ones say that like liberation through a single introductory word. Those individuals who are like jewels are liberated because the power of previous meditation is awakened by that condition. But this is not suitable for beginners. It is like the yogini Vinasa being liberated by seeing a water bubble burst. How can ordinary people be liberated even if they see a water bubble destroy three thousand great thousand worlds? However, if this method of taking whatever arises without alteration as the path is without error, even if one practices a little, it seems that it can balance the gross eight worldly concerns. But now, mostly it is introduced as a Bon practice, and it seems that it is just passing the day and pushing through life. Therefore, in order to take hold of this key without making mistakes, first, it is very important for the mind to abide, and wherever the object of focus is placed, it must be free from grasping and single-pointedly concentrated. The object should not be placed on external objects, but rather placing the mind on the mind. Once the mind is stable in one posture and body point, make those postures and points unfixed, and then train the mind as before. In meditation, do not have even a little bit of distraction in the state of having nothing. Then, for the clear arising of whatever appearances arise, such as external forms and sounds, train as before. Then, integrate it into all activities.
