Collected Teachings of Dolonatha JT107: Dispelling Obstacles. 4-657 ༄༅། །The Six Yogas: Dispelling Obstacles. First: The section explaining the general outline of dispelling obstacles. ༄༅། །The Six Yogas: Dispelling Obstacles. Namo guruve. Here, in order to practice the profound path of Vajra Yoga, as a necessary branch, I will explain a little bit of the essential instructions for dispelling obstacles. In summary, all obstacles can be categorized into three types: obstacles of demons that harm both body and mind; obstacles of samadhi that primarily harm the mind; and obstacles that primarily harm the body, which are disturbances of the elements, including bodily imbalances and their consequences. The common methods for dispelling these obstacles are: devotion to the guru; the view of understanding all appearances as illusory; unfeigned great compassion for all sentient beings; confession of sins; and diligent accumulation of merit. Among these, the main thing for dispelling obstacles and increasing accomplishments is solely devotion to the guru. The main thing for accumulation and purification is also to practice diligently for the sake of the guru through devotion. All obstacles are naturally liberated through devotion alone, just as one stone drives away a hundred birds. However, those who consider themselves wise and regard the path of cultivating devotion to the guru as the dharma of fools and inferiors, and who, because they have a little merit, do not rely on the guru as explained in the scriptures, but instead receive instructions in a manner of acquiring essential instructions, with an arrogant attitude, will either not generate any experience at all, or even if they generate a little, there is no doubt that it will be taken away by obstacles. Therefore, having abandoned these five essential points, such as devotion, and relying only on a little bit of visualization, prana practice, physical exercises, and sporadic methods of treating illnesses such as acupuncture, bloodletting, etc., hoping to dispel obstacles and increase accomplishments is simply deceiving oneself with delusion. If, on top of having the five essential points mentioned earlier, there is a disturbance of the elements causing bodily imbalance, then doing those minor treatments may have some benefit. However, if one does not truly understand the difference between experience and obstacles, and even if it is an obstacle, it may sometimes cause more harm than good, so it is very important for an experienced person to carefully examine it. The third obstacle.

So, the methods for individually guarding against and dispelling these obstacles are: For demonic obstacles, dispel them by practicing from the heart, which is seized by emptiness and compassion, the methods of guarding and averting spoken of in the tantras. In general, illnesses, unpleasant things, bad dreams, and ominous signs are not necessarily demonic obstacles. If these circumstances greatly hinder the Dharma, then they are demonic obstacles. If these circumstances encourage the Dharma and virtuous actions, and even offerings and the like increase virtuous deeds, and compassion, renunciation, devotion, etc., increase more and more, then it is the blessing of the Three Jewels that encourages the Dharma. Good dreams, increased enjoyment, kind words, pleasant speech, and temporary happiness are also not necessarily the blessings of the Three Jewels. If relying on these does not increase the Dharma, then it is an obstacle of the demon class. If the virtuous deeds of oneself and others constantly increase, then it is the blessing of the Three Jewels or the power of the white-sided gods. The obstacles of the mind or the obstacles of samadhi are: sinking and excitement, and continuous conceptual thoughts, and strong afflictions that are difficult to cut off. When the mind is sinking, one should think of the deeds of the perfectly complete Buddha, the qualities of the noble ones, the biographies of the former lamas, and the benefits of the Dharma, and thereby generate great joy. Then, exert effort to raise awareness, gather and meditate, and thereby dispel it. In addition, one can shorten the time of practice, choose a high place, a bright space, a cool place to meditate, or whip oneself with water, or look at the mandala of the moon, and so on, to dispel it. It can also be dispelled by diet and behavior. For excitement, such as remembering desirable objects, one should think of the suffering of samsara, the impermanence of this life, high and low status, wealth and poverty, and that there is no essence in any of the things of samsara, and thereby generate strong renunciation. Relax the consciousness, or place a sentinel of mindfulness on a single object, and slightly gathering can also dispel it. In addition, one can rely on the opposite methods that dispel sinking, and it can also be dispelled by diet and behavior. For continuous conceptual thoughts, one should recognize the arising of conceptual thoughts, count the conceptual thoughts, and constantly grasp the conceptual thoughts with mindfulness during practice to dispel them. Think of the faults of distraction and the benefits of abiding, and alternate between tightness and looseness.
