Collection of Teachings by Master Tāranātha JT106: A Text on the Signs and Measures of the Six-Branched Yoga. Herein lies the text on the signs and measures of the six-branched yoga. Herein lies the text on the signs and measures of the six-branched yoga. Namo Gurave. Regarding the signs and measures of practicing the profound path of Vajra Yoga, I shall now explain the rough classifications of signs. These root principles are clearly stated in the tantras and commentaries. The previous lineages have established these entirely through experiential realization. Even now, if the first branch (posture) is taken as primary and the others as secondary, then for the main practitioners of experience, the lineage of signs arising and qualities being born has been continuous. Furthermore, the experiential signs and measures of other Tibetan Dharma teachings, when practiced today, vary in their correspondence to what is said. The reason why the signs in this Dharma [system] arise without error and with certainty is that all the root principles of the instructions are taught completely and without omission from the tantras and the three cycles of Mind Commentary. Therefore, these instructions are the unaltered intention of Vajradhara. Others do not have the support of something like the three cycles of Mind Commentary, and the words of the tantras are unclear and hidden. It is said that many lineages have lost the subtle points of the instructions due to transmission through many lineages. In the preliminary stage of the three solitudes (body solitude, speech solitude, mind solitude), various uncertain visions and bodily sensations arise. During the three solitudes and the stage of withdrawal, depending on the circumstances, if the body posture is bent forward, the nāda in the center of the heart meets the wind in front, and consciousness suddenly becomes empty. If bent to the right, it meets fire and causes agitation. If bent to the left, it meets water and causes confusion. If bent backward, it meets earth and causes a sinking and solidifying sensation. Therefore, avoid these and straighten the spine, so that the channels between the heart and navel are straightened, thus binding the life force. By doing the vajra posture and properly contracting the lower part (perineum), the downward-clearing air descends. Bending the neck causes the upward-moving air to rise. Thirdly, in equal filling, it is necessary to exert force so that it arises naturally, because this maintains balance. By directing the gaze, the air flows into the eyes, and by bending the neck, the teeth and lips naturally...

Oh, by placing the tip of the tongue against the upper palate, the root of the ear also feels constricted, thus binding the air of the ear and tongue. Coordinating that posture with a slow exhalation through the nostrils is the air of the nose. Placing the fists on the thighs and keeping the body moderately tense and relaxed binds the air that circulates in the body. In summary, it binds the pervasive air. However, it is not possible to bind it solely through physical posture; it requires combining posture and focus. Having meditated in this way, if we focus primarily on the experience of the mind, then the first stage of experience is: The mind does not stay still for even a moment, and thoughts are more numerous than before, with extreme agitation. Some thoughts follow one after another without interruption, and are of completely different kinds. Some thoughts repeatedly arise, always based on the same object, but with slightly different forms. At this point, one might think, "Is it impossible to meditate?" or "Would it be better to do something else?" This is because, before meditating, although there were many thoughts, the mind was looking outward and did not recognize them. Now, the mind is looking inward, so one is merely slightly aware of the flow of thoughts, but it is not that there are more thoughts than before. Furthermore, at that time, for the most part, 4-631 because the posture is not mastered, the body is also very painful, and there is shortness of breath and trembling. The mind also feels irritable, wanting to leave, or feeling constricted. If there is a pre-existing old illness, one might think that it has recurred. This is the fruit of slightly grasping the mind, called the experience of "wavering," which is like a stream flowing down a steep mountain. The second stage is: without paying attention to the good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant aspects of those experiences, continue meditating. As before, although there are many thoughts, they become slightly calmer, and the body and breath also feel comfortable. After that, thoughts arise again as before, and the body and breath also feel uncomfortable. This is the experience called "attainment," like a small bird, or water flowing through a narrow hole. The third stage is that by continuing to meditate, one will feel that the head and upper body are somewhat heavy. It feels like the thoughts have become more subtle than before, and their power is also smaller, and they disappear quickly, like a spark rising into the sky. Sometimes the thoughts will suddenly stop, and sometimes the thoughts will no longer
