JT104 Teachings of Tāranātha: Outer Introduction to Vajra Yoga Outer Introduction to Vajra Yoga. Introducing reality as it is. Introducing through the view. Outer Introduction to Vajra Yoga. Oṃ Āḥ Hūṃ Ho Haṃ Kṣaḥ Homage to all the lamas! Here, in relation to the profound path of Vajra Yoga, one should know other uncommon introductions. Here, the common introductions will be shown. These are extremely important points for practicing yoga, but they are mostly well-known and familiar to most meditators in this area. For that reason, it is easy to understand and easy to obtain, so in this case, no details will be missed, and only the essence will be shown. Furthermore, here, in showing the profound path of Vajra Yoga, there are three parts: preliminary, main practice, and subsequent. Now is the stage of the subsequent introduction. Through such instruction, it has four points: introducing reality as it is, teaching the profound law of cause and effect, contemplating the greatness of the blessing lineage, and advising to keep secret from those who are not vessels and to propagate to those who are vessels. The first part is to introduce from the perspective of view, meditation, conduct, and result. The first part is to introduce from the perspective of view: introducing samadhi, the wisdom free from elaboration, as like the sky; introducing subsequent attainment, impartial wisdom, as like illusion; introducing union as the supreme unchanging. And it shows that to make these manifest, non-conceptual wisdom is necessary. The first part has four points, including introducing appearance as mind, etc. It is determined through scripture, reasoning, experience, and the three kinds of faith, that is, it is introduced in the manner of four fours, sixteen. Among them, the scripture for introducing appearance as mind is: In the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis, it says: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." In the Vajra Tent Tantra, it says: "Apart from the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no person. The basis and object of consciousness, there is not even a little that is external." Saraha also said: "Mind alone is the seed of all, from which samsara and nirvana arise." Nagarjuna also said: "Mind is sentient beings."

These are the five. The nature of happiness and suffering, there is nothing at all apart from the mind. Such are the endless quotations from sutras, tantras, and treatises. Introducing it through reasoning: If you know the path of reasoning, it is good to generate certainty through the endless reasoning mentioned in the scriptures that refutes external objects. Briefly, all these various appearances never exist apart from the mind. For a while, as it appears and is experienced in conventional reality, it is reasonable that it is merely an appearance of the mind. As the noble Asanga said: "Hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, and gods, each according to their kind, because one object is perceived differently by different minds, it is said that the object is not established." Like that, even for one object, there are different appearances for each of the six types of beings. Also, when one person is seen by three types of beings—enemies, friends, and neutral ones—they appear as pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral respectively. Moreover, even when one person is seen by only one other person, they appear unpleasant when they are an enemy in the first moment, and they appear pleasant when they become a friend in the second moment. Furthermore, when worldly gods and spirits appear in places like dwellings, if a person looks at that basis, it is a pile of rocks, a spring, or a statue of a god {like not seeing something encountered [a little]. In short, all of these present appearances are reasons why everything is just a mind-appearance. Although it is not established in reality, the appearance and experience of seeing, hearing, and touching as if they really exist is due to the power of the past imprints left on the mind being awakened by conditions, like the appearance of a dream. Introducing it through the door of meditative experience: Although the arising of the ten signs, such as smoke, is clearly seen and experienced, they do not go outward from one's own mind. These do not come from outside. Because this clear and knowing mind experiences them directly, it is certain that they are appearances of one's own mind. Thus it is said: "When a Bodhisattva in meditative equipoise sees an image with their mind, they reverse the wisdom of the object and definitely grasp their own concept. Thus, after knowing the mind within, one should realize that there is nothing to be grasped." Like that. Have faith.
