Collection of Teachings by Master Tāranātha JT60: A Few Profound Instructions. 1-696 ༄༅། །A Few Profound Instructions. Oṃ Svasti! Having bowed with my head to the sacred lotus feet of the supreme guru and the buddhas of the three times, I am delighted to make a few profound instructions, drawn from the ocean of nectar-like sacred Dharma. 1-697 Thus, the Teacher, the Tathāgata, taught countless gates of the sacred Dharma, not for the sake of belittling the words of others, nor for overpowering others, nor for boasting oneself, nor for spreading one's own side, but from the nature of great compassion without object, loving all beings equally, he taught in order to place them in the supreme bodhi that he himself had attained. Therefore, those who wish to practice the Dharma must also have as their main goal the means by which they and others will attain the state of unsurpassed enlightenment, buddhahood. And what should be the object of meditation as the basis for practicing and experiencing the Dharma in the first place? It is the suchness of reality. And this must be determined as follows: The mind is completely generated by the delusion of ignorance, and all these dharmas, included in the three realms of conventional reality, which appear like a dream, have never existed in the state of reality. However, in the appearance of the deluded mind, the result arises unfailingly from the collection of its own causes and conditions. Therefore, the dharmas included in conventional grasping and apprehended are merely illusory appearances, and have never existed from the beginning. Although they do not exist in this way, as long as the appearance of delusion is not purified, even the subtle causes and effects arise without confusion in the very nature of delusion. This is the object of generating the correct view from the very beginning. That is, having generated certainty in the infallibility of cause and effect, and practicing acceptance and rejection as it is, one abides in the correct view of the world. The door to the lower realms is blocked, and the door to the higher realms is opened. Furthermore, realizing that these appearances are merely delusions and have never existed from the beginning, the thoughts of grasping at things and grasping at signs are purified in the sphere of reality, and thus the transcendental wisdom is truly

will arise, and will also abandon the seeds of afflictions. Thus, Although all the phenomena of conventional grasping and clinging are not established from the beginning, the ultimate true realm, the Dharma-nature, self-aware, self-luminous, and free from elaboration, is true emptiness, the reality of all knowable things, naturally luminous, and called the Tathagatagarbha. This is the Dharma-nature of all phenomena, established from the beginning, and because it is experienced by the wisdom of the noble ones, it is the truth. Because it is unchanging, it is constant and stable. Because the reality is not inverted, it is Suchness, the non-erroneous Suchness. Thus, the reality now, although it is truly established and constant, is free from all elaboration, cannot be expressed in words, and cannot be grasped by the mind. Therefore, during meditation, do not meditate by thinking with discrimination, "This is true, this is constant." In non-conceptual meditation, do not cling to anything, and abide in a non-artificial manner. The reality of the fundamental knowable things, such as the Dharma-nature perfectly established, the Tathagatagarbha dwells in the hearts of all sentient beings, and that itself is the nature of the mind, and that alone enters and exists in the reality of things. Apart from that, all that appears and is spoken of by samsaric beings, and all the Dharma of the path, are not established in the reality of things, and are temporary. Because the key point of the ground is such, when practicing the path, temporarily conform to the appearance of delusion, and know that all of the three realms of samsara are of the nature of suffering, are impermanent, unstable, and will perish, and that the object of clinging to "I" and "mine," the self, is not established, that these phenomena have no agent, and arise from the aggregation of various causes and conditions. By repeatedly meditating on that meaning, because all the pleasures of samsara have no essence, a supreme thought of wanting to definitely escape from samsara will arise, and after that, not only to liberate oneself from such impermanent, painful, and meaningless samsara, but also the thought of liberating all sentient beings.
