English version Entering Samadhi (right concentration). Together we travel to the homes of all Buddhas in the Dharmadhatu (the realm of all phenomena). After rejoicing (Anumodana, rejoicing in merit), with utmost sincerity, we take refuge in the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). With utmost sincerity, we dedicate the merit. Since beginningless time, our minds have wandered, never once having truly dedicated merit. Today, we begin to realize that the mind is unborn; past delusions have created obstacles. May practitioners, like all Buddhas, be free from conceptualization and discrimination, and dedicate merit rightly. After dedicating merit, with utmost sincerity, we take refuge in the Triple Gem. With utmost sincerity, we make vows. May all beings see the source of the mind (original nature), quickly escape afflictions, transcend the sea of suffering, and swiftly realize the Great Nirvana (Mahaparinirvana, ultimate liberation) within themselves. May the compassionate Buddha protect and watch over us, and may we not be attached to views of existence or non-existence. After making vows, with utmost sincerity, we take refuge in the Triple Gem. This is based on the Ten Great Vows from the Avatamsaka Sutra. The first vow: May disciples, in all kalpas (aeons, units of time), in all places of birth, always respectfully make offerings to all Buddhas, without rest until the end of future time. The second vow: May disciples always uphold the profound Dharma-treasure (Dharma-treasure, treasure of the Dharma) of all Buddhas and Tathagatas, and may they awaken and understand on their own, without relying on others for enlightenment, without rest until the end of future time. The third vow: May disciples, in all places where Buddhas attain enlightenment, always prioritize upholding the Dharma, and request the turning of the Dharma wheel (Dharmacakra, teaching of the Dharma), without rest until the end of future time. The fourth vow: May disciples always practice the great vows and great conduct of all Bodhisattvas, without rest until the end of future time. The fifth vow: May disciples always be able to teach and transform all beings, whether born from eggs, wombs, moisture, or transformation; whether with form or without form; whether with thought or without thought; whether neither with thought nor without thought; I will lead them all into Nirvana without remainder (nirvana without remainder, nirvana without remaining afflictions). Thus, liberating immeasurable and boundless beings, in reality, no being is liberated. Without rest until the end of future time. The sixth vow: May disciples always know all Buddha lands as if they are right before their eyes, without rest until the end of future time. English version: Without ceasing. The eighth vow: May we disciples always be inseparable from all Buddhas (Buddha, the awakened one), Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, beings seeking enlightenment), and Kalyāṇa-mittas (Kalyāṇa-mitta, virtuous friends); may we cultivate together with one heart, accumulate all roots of goodness, and never cease until the end of the future. The ninth vow: May all our actions of body, speech, and mind not be in vain for any sentient being who sees or hears them, like the great medicine king tree, like the wish-fulfilling jewel; may we never cease until the end of the future. The tenth vow: May we disciples attain complete and perfect enlightenment (Sammasambuddha, perfect enlightenment), turn the Dharma wheel (Dharmacakra, the wheel of Dharma), and liberate all sentient beings; may we never cease until the end of the future. May all the roots of goodness cultivated through bowing to the Buddha, practicing the Way, repenting, making vows, burning incense, and lighting lamps be entirely dedicated to all sentient beings. May all sentient beings be forever free from all suffering in hells, as hungry ghosts, as animals, and in the realm of King Yama; may they always be born among humans and gods, see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, generate the Bodhicitta (Bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment), and practice the Bodhisattva path. Furthermore, may we dedicate these roots of goodness to unsurpassed Bodhi (Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment), not seeking worldly rewards of birth and death. Furthermore, may we dedicate these roots of goodness to the sea of the Dharmadhatu of Suchness. This is the text for praising Amitābha (Amitābha, the Buddha of immeasurable light) Buddha in the Western Pure Land. With utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitābha Buddha of the Western Pure Land. Contemplate that Amitābha's Land of Ultimate Bliss, vast and wide, is made of many treasures; the forty-eight vows arise in adornment, surpassing all Buddha-lands in excellence; the great assembly of this country and other lands, countless through endless eons, is beyond reckoning; I universally encourage returning to the West to join that assembly, where Samadhi like the sands of the Ganges naturally arises. May we together with all sentient beings be reborn in the Land of Peace and Joy. With utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitābha Buddha of the Western Pure Land. Beneath the ground, adorned with seven-jeweled banners, countless and boundless beyond measure, eight-sided and eight-faced, made of hundreds of treasures, seeing that unproduced, one naturally awakens; the unproduced treasure land is forever constant, each treasure emits countless lights; practitioners, with focused hearts, constantly gaze upon it, soaring in spirit, leaping into the Western Pure Land. May we together with all sentient beings be reborn in the Land of Peace and Joy. With utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitābha Buddha of the Western Pure Land.
