Sonam Gyaltsen's Teachings SG12, The Practice of the Glorious Four-Armed Black Mahakala, A Treasury of Activities. The Practice of the Glorious Four-Armed Black Mahakala, A Treasury of Activities. The Practice of the Glorious Four-Armed Black Mahakala, A Treasury of Activities. Namaḥ śrīmahākālāya catur-bāhave (Sanskrit). This is called 'A Treasury of Activities, the Practice of the Glorious Four-Armed Black Mahakala.' I prostrate to the feet of the venerable lama. From the non-dual wisdom of Vajradhara, for the sake of protecting the teachings, you emanate in a magical form as the protector of outer, inner, and secret (realms). May you, Black One, always protect (us). A person who has received empowerment and possesses samaya (vows), desiring to accomplish the four activities through this glorious protector, should practice the outer, inner, and secret stages of the four approaches and accomplishments. Here, one should obtain siddhis (accomplishments) through the method of approach. In a pleasing place, arrange the image of the protector. Arrange the five offerings. Arrange a torma (ritual cake) mainly consisting of food, adorned with various grains and meats as much as possible. Sit on a comfortable seat, and after completing the visualization and recitation of the yidam deity, in one's own heart, (visualize) paṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: paṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: paṃ, Literal meaning: paṃ), āḥ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: āḥ, Romanized Sanskrit: āḥ, Literal meaning: āḥ) arising as a lotus and sun disc. In the center, from hūṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: hūṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal meaning: hūṃ) (visualize) a five-pronged vajra, and in the center of the sun, visualize a blue hūṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: hūṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal meaning: hūṃ) syllable. From that (hūṃ syllable), light radiates, and the protector with his retinue, who will be described below, is invoked. Meditate that the goddesses emanating from the hūṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: hūṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal meaning: hūṃ) syllable make offerings, and offer with the mantra and mudras (hand gestures) that will appear below. Pray that all obstacles of myself and all sentient beings are pacified, and that all the siddhis (accomplishments) of the four activities are granted without exception. From the state of emptiness, paṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: paṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: paṃ, Literal meaning: paṃ) arises as a lotus, āḥ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: āḥ, Romanized Sanskrit: āḥ, Literal meaning: āḥ) arises as a moon disc, and on top of the moon disc, a white hūṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: hūṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal meaning: hūṃ) syllable arises as a curved knife or sword, with the moon in the center marked by the hūṃ (Tibetan, Sanskrit: hūṃ, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal meaning: hūṃ) syllable. All of these completely transform, and from the various lotuses and suns arises the oath-bound protector, the great Black Mahakala, abiding on the lotus and sun, with one face, four arms, and three eyes, with a lolling tongue, bared fangs, a short, wrathful form, a body color as black as rain clouds, red-yellow hair standing on end, adorned with the eight great nagas (serpent deities). Wearing a tiger skin loincloth, blazing with fierce light.
