‘Mantra Vehicle is taught as two,’ thus it is said. Non-Definite Audience: It refers to the minds of sentient beings in the six realms, with countless numbers of beings to be tamed, from which arise countless emanations of taming. As stated in the Third Cloud Tantra: ‘Disciples of the Sugata, beings of the six realms, all who dwell in the world, listen! Today the Teacher pours down the rain of Dharma, may all who have not arrived come here!’ This is like the example of a patient, a doctor, and an attendant. Non-Definite Dharma: It is taught in various vehicles. As stated in the Auspicious Conduct: ‘In the language of gods, the language of nagas, the language of yakshas, the language of kumbhandas, and the languages of humans, and as many sounds as there are of all beings, I teach the Dharma in all their languages.’ Thus, the emanation teaches the Dharma in the three realms. How does he teach? In the minds of sentient beings, there are eighty-four thousand afflictions. Twenty-one thousand arise from desire, and similarly from hatred, ignorance, and the equal division of the three. To counteract these, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, with skillful means and great compassion, taught eighty-four thousand Dharma doors. Twenty-one thousand are for subduing desire, similarly, the Sutra Pitaka for hatred, the Abhidhamma Pitaka for ignorance, and the Mantra and Vidyadhara Pitaka for the equal division of the three. In total, eighty-four thousand Dharma doors are taught. In summary, there are three categories: provisional meaning, definitive meaning, and the essential core. These are also divided into three turnings of the Dharma wheel, as recorded in the Vinaya Pitaka: Initially, in Varanasi, in the Deer Park of the Hermitage, the Dharma wheel of the Four Noble Truths was turned three times in twelve aspects. Secondly, on Vulture Peak Mountain and other places, the Dharma wheel of ultimate emptiness, both of which are unsurpassed, without occasion, of provisional meaning, established during the time of the basis of disputes. Thirdly, in the three abodes of the gods, or in the palace of the consort, the Blessed One, starting from the non-inherent nature of all dharmas, taught the extremely rare and wondrous Dharma wheel, turning it three times. This is unsurpassed, without occasion, of definitive meaning, not the place of disputes. As stated in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: ‘Spoken by the Bodhisattva Arya Samdhinirmocana in the presence of the Blessed One.’ This third turning of the Dharma wheel is Mantra.

Impermanence is such that: with a long life, it is long for benefiting; with a short life, it is short for benefiting. Some pass away without benefiting, while others attain enlightenment and become Buddhas. The Buddhas have eternal bodies and will never disappear. Showing Parinirvana is due to the impure appearance of the retinue. For example, the supreme emanation, Shakyamuni Buddha, showed the manner of passing into Nirvana at the age of eighty. Upon the request of the monks, he extended his life by three months and two years, showing the manner of passing into Nirvana at the age of eighty-two. The 'Golden Light Sutra' says: 'The Buddha does not enter Nirvana, nor does the Dharma decline, but for the benefit of sentient beings, he shows the manner of the Buddha's Nirvana.' Among the immeasurable retinue of the Buddha, the compilers of the teachings were: the compiler of mantras was known as the Bodhisattva Vajrapani, and the compiler of the Paramitas was known as Ananda. In reality, they are of the same essence but have different appearances. The 'Cool Grove Sutra' says: 'Having heard much and holding the secret mantras, I pay homage to Ananda.' After the Buddha's Nirvana, who will uphold the Buddha's teachings? Then, the retinue asked: 'After the Buddha's Nirvana, who will uphold the Buddha's teachings?' The Buddha replied: 'Saraha and Nagarjuna will uphold the teachings.' The Buddha prophesied that Saraha would appear in the city of Varanasi in the 'Sutra of Creation': 'After I disappear from here, one hundred and twelve years later, in the southern Glorious Mountain, one named Saraha will uphold the essential teachings.' Nagarjuna's upholding of the teachings is also prophesied in the 'Lankavatara Sutra': 'Four hundred years after my Nirvana, in the southern place called Bhita, a monk named Nagarjuna will appear, he will abandon the extremes of existence and non-existence, and he will uphold my teachings.' From the pure realm of the mandala palace, the pure retinue gathers, the glorious Heruka, in the selfless mother of emptiness, enjoys the non-dual state. I pay homage to Vajradhara and take refuge in you! This brief account of Vajradhara's biography is composed by the wandering Kusulu Mogchok, based on the words of the previous masters, so that the holders of the lineage may realize it. May this virtue enable myself and all sentient beings to quickly attain the state of Vajradhara! Sarva Mangalam! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
