Shambala Kagyu Instructions NG8: The Activities of the Three Kayas of the Buddha 1-92 The Activities of the Three Kayas of the Buddha Establishing the Three Kayas of Non-Duality: A Presentation of the Three Kayas What kind of unchanging result is obtained? The Activities of the Three Kayas of the Buddha Homage to the Bhagavan, Glorious Vajrasattva! Unconditional compassion, pure as the sky, Supreme activity, becoming the glory of beings, Fulfilling all hopes of the three realms, I bow to the feet of the precious and supreme Lama. In this present Fortunate Aeon, one thousand and two Buddhas will appear. Three Buddhas have already appeared, and here is the teaching of Buddha Shakyamuni. The father of the Teacher was King Shuddhodana, the mother was Queen Maya, and the prince was named Siddhartha. He took birth and manifested enlightenment in the manner of the Twelve Deeds. The Teacher, in terms of inner meaning, is Vajradhara. Initially, for the sake of disciples with attachment, such as King Indrabodhi, he taught the Four Classes of Tantras and so forth. The retinue consists of Wrathful Deities, Wrathful Goddesses, and Bodhisattvas of the Ten Bhumis. The time is from the end of existence until beyond the world. The Buddha's mandala is the complete bhaga of Vajravarahi. Why is the Teacher called Vajradhara? Because he holds the samadhi of Dharma-nature, which is like a vajra, he is called Vajradhara. 1-93 As it is said, 'Vajradhara,' why? The wisdom of all Buddhas, And whoever possesses Bodhicitta, That is the Victorious Vajradhara, The Lord of all the Tathagatas. Therefore, the complete abandonment and realization is the Buddha. Outwardly, it is Shakyamuni Buddha; inwardly, it is Vajradhara. The nature of both is the Dharmakaya, the essence of the Three Kayas, which is the Buddha. First, generate the supreme Bodhicitta. What is it? The Ornament of Clear Realization says: 'This all-knowing wisdom has great compassion as its root, Bodhicitta as its cause, and is perfected by strength.' The Avatamsaka Sutra says: 'Bodhicitta is like the seed of all Buddhas.' The Ornament of Clear Realization says: 'The generation of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment.' In between, accumulate the two accumulations of merit and wisdom. As the Vajra Array says: 'The Form Kaya is endowed with the accumulation of merit, wisdom --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The body of perfect equality, it is not found by searching, but is the collection of results at the time of the cause. Thus. Ultimately, it is the complete enlightenment of Buddhahood. As it says in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: 'I do not pass into extinction in actions, characteristics, or entities. I pass into extinction in reversion.' Thus. Also, as it says in the *Sūtra*: 'Even if countless names of Buddhas are mentioned, in terms of names, the Buddha is the nature of the five bodies, the lord of the pervasive five wisdoms.' Thus, it speaks of the five bodies. The *Abhisamayālaṅkāra* says: 'The Svābhāvikakāya and the Saṃbhogakāya, as well as the Nirmāṇakāya and activities, the activities of the Dharmakāya, are perfectly endowed with four aspects.' Thus, it speaks of the four bodies. The *Guhyasamāja Tantra* says: 'The one with the characteristics of realization and enjoyment, the unconditioned Dharmakāya, the various appearances of the Nirmāṇakāya, there is no doubt that the three bodies will be attained.' Thus, it speaks of the three bodies. Also, as it says in the *Uttaratantra*: 'Unconditioned, spontaneously accomplished, not realized by the conditions of others, endowed with knowledge, love, and power, the Buddha who possesses the two benefits.' Thus, it shows the two bodies. The *Vajracchedikā Sūtra* says: 'Those who see me in form, those who know me by sound, those people have entered into wrong thinking, they do not see me. The guides are the Dharmakāya, truly see them as the nature of Dharma.' Thus, it also speaks of one body. If asked, 'Why are they inconsistent?' The answer is that they are spoken with regard to each aspect of the qualities that are summarized. If asked, 'What exactly is the intention of the Buddha?' The *Guhyasamāja Tantra* says: 'Separate from all entities, aggregates, elements, and sense bases, abandoning grasping and the grasped, the equality of no self of phenomena, because one's own mind is primordially unborn, emptiness is its nature.' Thus, the self-benefiting, peaceful Dharmakāya abides in a state of being free from all elaboration. Although abiding in such a state, through the power of pure aspirations from the past and the power of great compassion, for the benefit of others, it manifests in the form of two bodies, appearing in the form that each being desires, thereby accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. As it says in the fifty-first chapter of the *Root Tantra*: 'To sentient beings with many desires, showing various behaviors, to those to be tamed with various methods, showing various means.' Also, as the *Kālacakra Tantra* says: 'The virtuous and pure one is the Dharmakāya, this body is the basis of the Saṃbhogakāya.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
