Collected Teachings of the Great Scholar Sakya Chokden skc154: Commentary on the Mirror of Poetry - The Playful Ocean of Saraswati 24-1-1a Commentary on the Mirror of Poetry - The Playful Ocean of Saraswati Chapter One: Detailed Explanation of Differentiation Commentary on the Mirror of Poetry - The Playful Ocean of Saraswati 24-1-1b The first chapter of the treatise on poetics called 'Mirror of Poetry,' made clear with concise words, named 'The Playful Ocean of Saraswati.' May Saraswati, with her charming form of four plays in the garden of the mouths of the four Vedas, in the white nectar of the four cultures (Sanskrit, Pali, vernacular, dialect), grant me confidence in the four languages! From the treatises of Rama Sharma and others, like displaying mirrors, the 'Mirror of Poetry' of poetics, I will show the shining excellent explanations within it as they are, without losing their original appearance. Here, all supreme things appear following the footsteps of the supreme ones, and by the grace of these words, I am able to enter the field of language. Good meaning and words, as the manifester of poetry, are pleasing to the ear and delightful to the mind, it will dispel all the ignorance of the three realms. The former protectors of the earth, the lords of beings, although they are no longer near us, their merits are undiminished in the mirror of fame. Likewise, this treatise blessed by Saraswati is also the most excellent work that can fulfill the wishes of the lord of language (Brahma). 24-1-2a If one does not know the treatises of the past and adds erroneous explanations to poetry, then this will lead those followers (referring to poets) to pursue inferior behaviors that please the gods. Therefore, even if there are minor flaws in poetry, they should not be ignored. Just as even if the body is beautiful, one flaw will bring misfortune. If people do not understand treatises, how can they distinguish between merits and flaws? Just as when distinguishing forms, what can blind people see? Therefore, in order to make future generations proficient in poetics, the wise must compile these clear and well-organized words according to certain rules. Poetry is composed of 'body' and 'ornaments.' The 'body' can be divided into three types from the perspective of style, four types from the perspective of phonetics, and two types from the perspective of combination methods. The first type is verse, prose, and mixed text, these three styles. 24-1-2b Next, the definition and classification of poetry, as well as great poems, will be described, and different writing methods will be explained.

Regarding the three ‘Pelma’ (Tibetan transliteration, meaning ‘intertwined’): They consider continuous combination to be possible. That is to say, from the collection of combinations, not divided by verses, and in which the letters are well connected, clarified by verbs, that is none other than continuous. They cite this as a source. ‘Danglo’ (name of a person) says that this source does not exist. In the ‘Mirror of Poetry’, continuous and cumulative verses are included. In the ‘Source of Precious Combinations’, it is said that up to twenty-seven letters, they are continuous and cumulative, and the difference between the two lies in the increase of ‘ra’ and ‘ma’. Each of them has eight forms: fierce rainfall, water flow, ocean, snake, rain cloud, the source of play, very hidden, called ‘conch’. However, continuous verses have two forms: divided and undivided. The undivided and the ‘Pelma’ (Tibetan transliteration, meaning ‘intertwined’) spoken of here are the same in meaning. The first part is the distinction of definitions. The definition of a quatrain, in other texts, is stated from one line to six lines. There are two ways to distinguish: through the way of combination; there are four ways to distinguish through the method of combination. They are ‘Vritta’ (Sanskrit transliteration, meter) and ‘Jati’ (Sanskrit transliteration, rhythm). They are called ‘increase’ and ‘generation’. ‘Sakya’ (Tibetan Buddhist sect) translates it as ‘entering’ and ‘kind’. Counting vowels is ‘Vritta’ (Sanskrit transliteration, meter), and counting consonants is ‘Jati’ (Sanskrit transliteration, rhythm). Each short vowel and consonant counts as one, long vowels and consonants count as two, and very long ‘Pluta’ (Sanskrit transliteration, prolonged sound) and consonants count as three. This knowledge of combination is the boat for those who want to cross the ocean of poetry. Distinguishing from the way of expression is the definition of various distinctions. The first is liberation, kind, and treasure, and the four forms called gathering. It is not stated in the ‘Mirror of Poetry’, but it is said in ‘Entering the Wise’: expressing the complete meaning with one verse is considered liberation. From the gathering between verses, expressing the complete meaning is called kind. In one situation, different places and different actions are called treasure. Or, expressing many meanings with one verse. Praising with many actions in one place is considered gathering. Or, expressing one meaning with many verses. The second is great poetry, ‘Sarga’ (Sanskrit transliteration, chapter) refers to chapters, and verses bound by chapters are called great poetry. To show its combination, the first is opening the door of writing, the middle is the state of the body, and the last is showing the way of writing. Auspicious statements, salutations, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
