Regarding the meaning of the word 'aspiration' (Smon pa), there are two aspects: first, supplementing the aspiration Bodhicitta (Smon pa sems bskyed) from other treatises; and second, explaining the method of training the mind after entering the aspiration Bodhicitta through this very treatise. Firstly, it is divided into two parts: one is seeking the cause of aspiration, and the other is actually making the aspiration after finding the cause. The first part is further divided into two parts: one is the inherent immediate cause, and the other is relying on the contributing conditions that produce the result. The first is the naturally abiding lineage (rang bzhin du gnas pa'i rigs), and there is no sentient being that is not encompassed by it. The second is called the increasing lineage (rgyas 'gyur gyi rigs). It is further divided into the condition that initially awakens the power of the seed, and the condition that, once awakened, does not diminish but increases. The first is taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Whether or not one understands their qualities, it awakens the power of the naturally abiding lineage. The second is divided into two: the root of the condition is loving-kindness (byams pa), and the main factor of the condition is compassion (snying rje). Therefore, these three, such as taking refuge, are called the increasing lineage, because from these three, the mind that seeks the benefit of others arises naturally. Secondly, how does the fruit of aspiration arise after obtaining the cause? Wherever these three causes are gathered, the mind that seeks complete enlightenment for the benefit of others can arise naturally, because a sufficient number of causes for the arising of such a mind have been gathered. In short, for the one in whom the mind that seeks complete enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings has manifested, that is called aspiration Bodhicitta. At that time, the main cause of that very Bodhicitta is the mind that seeks the benefit of others, and the main result is the benefit of others. Loving-kindness and the other two must also be directed towards all sentient beings; even if one is biased towards only one, it cannot be the cause of the aspiration mind, because that would become its opposite. As it is said, as the scripture says: 'The arising of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment.' How do benefits arise from relying solely on this? As the scripture says: 'Its benefits are immeasurable, as explained by the compassionate protector, Norzang, who possesses wisdom.' In this tradition of the chariot, even the aspiration mind obtained through rituals is only an intermediate stage and does not commit to vows. In other traditions of the chariot, abandoning the Bodhicitta is considered a root downfall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems that they also approve of the vow of aspiration. Regarding how to enter Bodhicitta and how to train the mind, this treatise explains as follows: It is divided into two parts: how to take the vows, and how to learn what should be learned through reflection and practice. How to take the vows: First, the individual (Sanskrit: Pudgala) as the basis must generate the aspiring Bodhicitta, have heard the teachings of the Bodhisattva Pitaka, and hold any of the seven vows of individual liberation. As for which ritual to use, it should be taken according to the ritual mentioned in the 'Chapter on Ethics'. Its meaning is as follows: As it is said in the scripture: 'I have generated the supreme Bodhicitta, I invite all sentient beings as guests, I will practice the excellent and pleasing Bodhisattva conduct.' Repeat it three times, and then it is enough to complete it with praise. How to learn what should be learned through reflection and practice: Learning the precepts of guarding against misconduct: It is divided into three parts: learning the precepts of guarding against misconduct, learning to benefit sentient beings, and learning to accumulate merit. The first part is divided into four aspects: transforming the place where one cherishes oneself into others, thereby naturally stopping hatred; transforming others into objects of hatred into oneself, thereby naturally stopping attachment; if obvious attachment and hatred arise, then take countermeasures; and revealing that the methods of counteracting attachment and hatred in the Hinayana are unreasonable. First, 'May I regard them as the supreme treasure,' this is the basis of what is said, merely revealing its meaning. Then, to whom should this be done? To all sentient beings. By whom should it be done? By my own mind. For what purpose? To achieve the supreme benefit that surpasses the wish-fulfilling jewel, to achieve Buddhahood. In what way? As it is said in the scripture: 'The Buddhas and sentient beings, the achievement of the Dharma is the same, why respect the Buddha in this way, but not sentient beings?' In this way. This automatically prevents the opportunity for hatred to arise, thereby achieving patience. Second, 'May others become my supreme treasure,' these are the words of the first and second sentences. By whom should it be done? With firm determination, because one's own inner measure is obvious, but one cannot measure the inner measure of others. In what way? At any place and time, when associating with people who may be equal to or surpass oneself, by regarding oneself as the lowest of all. What is the purpose? To overcome pride, so it is the opposite of the previous method. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
