Great Pandit Shakya Chokden's (Shakya Chokden, a wise man from the Shakya clan) Collection of Instructions skc148: Commentary on 'Eight Verses on Training the Mind' entitled 'Three Meanings Clearly Explained' Commentary on 'Eight Verses on Training the Mind' entitled 'Three Meanings Clearly Explained' Purpose, Summary Commentary on 'Eight Verses on Training the Mind' entitled 'Three Meanings Clearly Explained' Swasti! Where there is the Complete Perfect Buddha, His sons, solitary realizers, Listeners, and those who benefit others, Flourish and are born; Where there is not, all of these, Do not appear in the world; Therefore, the Bodhicitta, Should be practiced and revered. After such praise, The tradition of exchanging self and others, In the snowy land of Tibet, Initially opened and upheld by, The one known as Langtangpa (Geshe Langtangpa, a great master of the Kadampa school of Tibetan Buddhism), his treatise, Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, Its purpose and summary, I will begin to distinguish the words and meanings. Here, for individuals whose potential for the Great Vehicle is fully developed, initially preceded by loving-kindness and supreme compassion, generating the supreme aspiration for Bodhicitta, Thereafter, properly taking the vows of a Bodhisattva, and taking the method of exchanging self and others as the main practice of those vows, this treatise will clearly explain the stages of mind training, which is vast in content and concise in words. This explanation contains three meanings: purpose, summary, and meaning of the words. Firstly, what is the purpose? It is the root of the Bodhisattva's vows, generating the intention to be able to exchange self and others. How is this known? If this intention is not the precursor, no matter how much one practices the six perfections, the practice related to these vows will not be complete; if one fully trains in this intention, then without effort, the great conduct of the six perfections will naturally arise. Therefore, when entering this treatise through hearing and thinking, easily realizing its purpose is the connection here. How is its connection known? This concise text reveals the root of skillful means to be able to exchange self and others. What is the root? It is cherishing all sentient beings without partiality. How is it known that such an ability arises from that cause? If one clings to oneself as extremely precious, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because the position (of attaining Buddhahood) cannot be given to others. Secondly, the summarized meaning has eight verses. The first seven verses, through reasons and examples, explain that others are more superior than oneself, and this must be recognized. The eighth verse explains that for this kind of cognition, a wisdom that is not contaminated by the conceptual mind of clinging to names is also needed. Alternatively, the first seven verses train the mind by practicing the teachings of conventional Bodhicitta, while the eighth verse trains the mind by practicing the teachings of ultimate Bodhicitta. The first part includes presenting the reason and actually performing the exchange of self and others after recognizing this. In the first part, it also includes presenting the reason that can establish it and contemplating the example as a way of knowing. In the first part, it also includes the true reason and the way the reason as a sign returns from dissimilar things. The first part is the first verse, because achieving Buddhahood depends on other sentient beings, therefore others are considered superior. The second part includes having to regard oneself as inferior to others, and how to avoid regarding oneself as superior. The first part is 'Where' etc., that is, one cannot achieve Buddhahood by oneself without relying on others. The second part is, if the idea of thinking oneself superior to some sentient beings is based on the nature of things themselves, then how to avoid it? The third verse shows that the idea of cherishing oneself can be avoided through discriminating wisdom. The second example of a way of knowing is that even if other sentient beings are more superior than oneself, one must avoid the idea of thinking oneself superior. The fourth verse shows that if a poor person encounters a treasure mine, because all wishes can be fulfilled, it cannot be abandoned. In short, it is proved by reason that other sentient beings are superior, and it is shown by appropriate examples that one must cherish the superior. Secondly, the actual exchange includes two aspects: one must give the benefit of the language expressed to others, and one must give the benefit of the meaning expressed to others. The first aspect is the fifth verse, which is at the cost of worldly bad luck. The second aspect includes having to regard the enemy who causes harm as a spiritual friend, and after looking at it in this way, one must replace the harm with help. The first aspect is explained by the sixth verse, and the second aspect is explained by the seventh verse. In terms of the meaning of the words, the aspiration Bodhicitta is supplemented from other Bodhicitta treatises. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
