Great Scholar Shakya Chokden's Instructions, Collection skc138: 'A Short Spear of Penetration: An Explanation of the Categories of Self-Position Refutation'. A Short Spear of Penetration: An Explanation of the Categories of Self-Position Refutation. In the garden of debate, Refutations dance like cymbals. In the mirror of the wise mind, Clearly appear various reasonings. I prostrate to your speech! The new clouds of reason, In the black clouds of the categories of refutation, Lie asleep on the bed of the demoness, Wearing the blue garment of the darkness of reason. Thereafter, a hundred treatises, like the eastern mountains, At dawn, riding on the vehicle of the arms of wisdom, This sun of reason arises. Specifically, some later Tibetan scholars assert that, taking a place purified by a pot as the subject, a pot and a rabbit's horn are the same. The reason is: because that object does not exist in that subject, because you are the category of refutation for that object. That's what they say. That subject, there should be a pot, because you are the object measured by the omniscient valid cognition that knows the pot. That subject, it should exist, because you exist. If it doesn't pervade, then the omniscient valid cognition that knows the pot, if it exists, then it should be your object, because you are the omniscient wisdom. Also, that subject, there should be a pot, because all knowable things exist. If it is not established, then that subject, if the pot does not exist, then all knowable things should not exist, because they all do not exist. If you accept, then you have promised, and if all knowable things exist, then the pot should exist, because you accept. If you accept, then you have promised, and that subject, the pot should belong to the category of knowable things, because if all knowable things exist, then the pot should exist. The sign has been removed, and it has been promised. The pervasion is established by valid cognition. Also, the pot, should exist, because it is perceived by valid cognition. Such a consequence, if you exist, then your reason is pervaded by being established, because you are a consequence, and your reason is established. If you accept, then you have promised. The place purified by the pot, should exist, because of that reason. If you accept, then you have promised. That subject, there should be a pot, because the pot is perceived by valid cognition. All three. Also, to the opponent who asserts that the pot is permanent, the pot, should not be made, because it is permanent. Such a consequence, if you exist, then you should be a correct consequence, because you are a correct consequence. If you accept, then you have promised. The place purified by the pot --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject (Tibetan: ཕྱོགས་ཆོས་ཅན།, meaning: thesis), because of that, there is a subject. If you admit it, then accept it. That subject should not be made by a vase, because this is a valid inference. Accept the reversed reason (Tibetan: རྟགས་བསལ་ཁས་བླངས།), the pervasion is valid (Tibetan: ཁྱབ་པ་ཚད་མའོ།). Furthermore, if the basis is established, then the pervasion of no vase is the subject, if it is selflessness, then it should pervade that you do not exist, because you must not exist. The reason and pervasion are valid. If you admit it, then accept it. The place purified by the vase is the subject, because of that, there is a subject. All three are like that. Furthermore, the vase is the subject, it should not exist, because it is not cognized by a valid means. Take the reason of this inference as the subject and apply it in the same way. Something that is not a vase is the subject, if you exist, you must be a substance, because you are a substance. The reason and pervasion are valid. If you admit it, then accept it. That subject, because of that, there is a subject. If you admit it, then accept it. That subject, it is not it is not, because it is a substance. If you admit it, that subject, the vase should exist, because the vase is a vase. The reason is directly contradictory. Furthermore, something different from the vase is the subject, if you exist, you must be self-nature, because you are self-nature. The reason and pervasion are valid. If you admit it, that subject, because of that, there is a subject. If you admit it, then accept it. That subject, it is not it is, because it is self-nature. If you admit it, it is not existent, because it is not it. If you admit it, that subject, the same as the vase exists, because non-different from the vase exists. Accept the reversed reason. Furthermore, something contradictory to the vase is the subject, if you exist, you must not be the opposite of self-nature, because you are that. If you admit it, that subject, because of that, there is a subject. That subject, it is not it is not, because it is not the opposite of self-nature. If you admit it, then accept it. That subject, that which is contradictory to the vase is contradictory to the vase, because it is not contradictory to that. Because it does not exist. Accept the reason, the pervasion is valid. Furthermore, the vase and mutual difference, is also the place purified by the vase, does such a common basis exist? If it does not exist, knowable subject, there should exist such a common basis, because the place purified by the vase is such a common basis. If it exists, the place that becomes such a common basis, should not be your object of refutation, because it is selflessness. If you admit it, then accept it. That subject, such a common basis exists, because you are not the object of refutation of such a common basis. If you admit it, that subject, the vase exists. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
