Collected Teachings of the Great Scholar Shakya Chokden skc105: A Treatise on How the Turning of the Wheel of Dharma is Accomplished, Called 'A Feast for the Wise' Oṃ Svasti Siddham (藏文:ཨོཾ་སྭསྟི་སིདྡྷཾ།,梵文天城体:ओṃ स्वस्ति सिद्धम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ svasti siddhaṃ,Meaning: Om, may there be well-being, may there be accomplishment). Wherever there is a path of benefit and happiness, to those who tirelessly strive to open it, to the light of the one known as 'Friend of the Sun,' I pay homage, who makes the three realms ( संसार,saṃsāra,cyclic existence) into daylight! The flower-arrow lord of the Paranirmita-vasavartin (他化自在天), the youthful maiden of the heart gently entered, controlled by the friend of the great darkness of ignorance, the sun of the teachings departs on the path of darkness. Thereafter, in the vast sky of discernment, displaying the great movements of the sun and moon of scripture and reason, may it nurture the lotus garden of the sutra and tantra teachings, and cause the water lilies of hearing, thinking, and meditating to bloom. After such auspicious words as a prelude, we come to the matter at hand. In general, when the sun of the teachings rises, to prevent it from setting, and when it sometimes sets, to quickly generate the power of wisdom and diligence to make it rise, this is what is termed 'turning the wheel of Dharma'. Moreover, our own teacher, endowed with great compassion, first causes disciples to enter the path, in the middle causes them to mature, and finally causes them to be liberated; these doors of speech are called the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma. Thereafter, Arhats (梵文:अर्हत्,arhat, one who has destroyed the defilements and attained liberation) possessing the eye of Dharma, having obtained unfailing dharanis (梵文:धारणी,dhāraṇī,retention), reciting the words of the Tripitaka (梵文:त्रिपिटक,tripiṭaka, the three collections of Buddhist scriptures) from memory, this is called recitation. Thereafter, refuting the impurities in the well-spoken Vinaya (梵文:विनय,vinaya,Buddhist monastic discipline), this is called refutation. Thereafter, writing the Tripitaka in books and enshrining them, this is called the three councils. Thereafter, the teachers who were prophesied to be holders of the teachings and discriminators of the definitive and interpretable, and their disciples and grand-disciples, newly composed treatises without differentiating between the Buddha's words and reliable sources, replenishing what was lacking in the Buddha's words, and refuting what was incorrect, thereby causing the precious teachings to flourish and remain for a long time. For example, the venerable Nagarjuna (梵文:नागार्जुन,Nāgārjuna) invited the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra (梵文:प्रज्ञापारमितासूत्र,Prajñāpāramitāsūtra) from the land of the nagas, and roared three times like a lion on the earth, and... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vimalamitra invited the Five Treatises of Maitreya from Tushita, like opening the chariot path with treatises such as the Five Categories of Grounds (Sa-sde lnga). Generally, in India, the earliest collections of treatises were the Vedic treatises. Among them, grammar, medicine, poetics, and prosody are acknowledged as standards by those who use terminology both internally and externally. Therefore, many Buddhist treatise writers also used them as branches to explain the intention of the Buddha's teachings. As for this teaching itself, it is explained that what is known as the Seven Treatises of Abhidharma is the earliest tradition of treatises. The beginning of the treatises of words of the Great Vehicle is that Lord Nagarjuna wrote treatises explaining the intention of the Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma, and Asanga wrote explanations mainly focusing on the Third Turning. Those who wrote treatises free from disputes are known as 'Ornament of Jambudvipa.' Great scholars such as Shantideva and Abhayakaragupta, with a constellation of treatises free from disputes, made the precious teachings flourish, prosper, and not decline. Thus, initially, the Teacher (Buddha) spoke, the compilers compiled, and the treatise writers composed, which is the order of the turning of the Wheel of Dharma of the Sage (Buddha) in India, briefly just these three. Thus, in the sacred land (India), the teachings of the Three Baskets (Tripitaka) remained for nearly two or three thousand years. At that time, the noble Avalokiteshvara consciously took birth in the snowy land of Tibet, and invited the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha that the Teacher himself had consecrated. Through the power of its blessings, King Trisong Detsen invited Bodhisattva Shantarakshita and the emanation Padmasambhava. Vairochana and the three of Ka, Chog, and Zhang, etc., naturally appeared as emanation translators. They translated many outer and inner secret mantra teachings, including the Three Baskets and their commentaries. Taking as examples the construction style of Otantapuri Monastery and the manner in which the three great monasteries of hearing, thinking, and meditating existed, in the center they built a great Vajradhatu mandala equal to Mount Meru, and around it, each monastery was like the four continents and eight subcontinents. They established monastic communities for taking vows and halls for Vinaya lectures. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
