The Collection of Instructions by the Great Scholar Shakya Chokden skc97, Chapter Twelve, Concluding with a Presentation of the Benefits of Explaining the Inexpressible Madhyamaka, from 'The Treasury of Definitive Understanding of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka, the Ocean of Scripture and Reasoning'. Chapter Twelve, Concluding with a Presentation of the Benefits of Explaining the Inexpressible Madhyamaka, from 'The Treasury of Definitive Understanding of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka, the Ocean of Scripture and Reasoning'. Concluding with a Presentation of the Benefits of Knowing the Inexpressible Madhyamaka. Firstly, the Benefits of Devotion to the Prajnaparamita. Thus, this treatise is a complete chapter, and the great treasury of scripture and reasoning is eleven. Each of these has ten different points of definitive understanding of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka. One hundred and ten collections of teachings, and each of these also has ten different categories of scripture and reasoning, adorned with one thousand and one hundred. This great treatise is thus completed. Furthermore, it is said: 'In the land of snow, the previous authors of treatises, all of them proceeded equally from the path of good explanations. Some later authors with clear reputations, explained most of the previous ones on a divergent path. Here, having gained confidence in the profound subject, with many wheels of scripture and reasoning, leading the previous doctrines from above to above, this great treatise has been made.' Those who write treatises and those who encourage them, do not let your minds be led by the powerful intoxication of jealousy, do not make this a platform for slandering others, but apply it to the purpose of upholding the precious teachings of the Buddha. This is a verse of rest. Having equally followed all that is to be known, sometimes to the Victorious One himself, and sometimes to the sacred Dharma, and sometimes to the body of the Noble One, showing the teacher, I prostrate to the mother of the Victorious Ones (Prajnaparamita). By the force of the wind of gaining unwavering certainty in the words of the Victorious One and his intentions, if some words of wrong explanation or slander may slip out, may whatever fault be pacified in the Dharmadhatu itself. Thus, having preceded with praise and the vow to compose, the third part is to conclude by showing the benefits of knowing the inexpressible Madhyamaka, which has three parts: first, the benefits of devotion to the Prajnaparamita; second, the benefits of learning the Madhyamaka of the expressive text; and finally, the benefits of knowing the Madhyamaka of the expressed meaning. The first is: As it is said in the 'Collected Verses of Precious Qualities': 'Whenever I am with this supreme Prajnaparamita,' Speaking in accordance with this, at that time before --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘In the future time, you will become a Buddha.’ Thus, the Tathagata [Tathagata, title of a Buddha] himself prophesied to me.’ The Tathagata said: ‘In past practices, even if countless Buddhas were honored, if one does not have faith in the Tathagata's Prajnaparamita [Prajnaparamita, the perfection of wisdom], upon hearing it, the narrow-minded will abandon it, and after abandoning it, they will become helpless and go to Avici [Avici, the lowest level of hell].’ Therefore, if you want to attain the supreme wisdom of the Buddha, you should have faith in the mother of the Tathagatas (referring to the Prajnaparamita). The above is about the benefits of studying Madhyamaka [Madhyamaka, a school of Buddhist philosophy emphasizing the Middle Way] as the scripture to be interpreted. The second part is about the benefits of merely writing down the words and making offerings even without understanding their meaning; the benefits of merely listening to the words; the benefits of learning the meaning of the words; and the benefits of explaining them to others after understanding them oneself. The first part is about the benefits of writing and offering oneself, and the benefits of giving (sharing) to others. The first case is: As it is said: ‘Some people make offerings to the stupas [Stupa, a Buddhist architectural structure, usually containing relics] made of seven precious materials after the Tathagata [Tathagata, title of a Buddha] has completely passed into Parinirvana [Parinirvana, the state of liberation in Buddhism], filling countless Buddha-lands [Buddha-land, the world where a Buddha resides] with the number of grains of sand in the Ganges [Ganges, a river in India], and continuously offering these boundless Buddha-lands.’ ‘In which reside immeasurable beings, who do nothing else but offer heavenly flowers, incense, and perfumes for three periods or more.’ ‘If someone writes down the mother of the Tathagata [Tathagata, title of a Buddha] (referring to the Prajnaparamita), who will generate the Ten Powers [Ten Powers, the ten powers of a Buddha], and explains it, and reveres it with flowers and perfumes, then the merit of making offerings to stupas cannot compare to it.’ ‘This supreme Prajnaparamita is a great Mantra [Mantra, a sacred utterance believed to have spiritual power], which pacifies the afflictions and sufferings of many beings and brings the peace of the Dharma [Dharma, Buddhist teachings].’ The second case is: ‘Some people tame all the beings in the Buddha-lands [Buddha-land, the world where a Buddha resides] as numerous as the sands of the Ganges [Ganges, a river in India] into Arhats [Arhat, a Buddhist saint who has attained liberation].’ ‘If someone writes down this Prajnaparamita and donates the scripture to the supreme beings, then the merit he obtains will be even more excellent.’ ‘Why? Because those supreme ones (referring to the Buddhas) [Buddha, the awakened one] learn from here and explain the emptiness (Emptiness) of all Dharmas [Dharma, Buddhist teachings] here.’ The second part is about the benefits of listening from others, divided into two: the benefits of relying on the Kalyanamitra [Kalyanamitra, spiritual friend] who proclaims it; and the benefits of listening from him after relying on him. The first case is: ‘Therefore, those who seek supreme Bodhi [Bodhi, enlightenment] should completely destroy arrogance with strong intention and wisdom.’ ‘Just as a group of patients relies on a doctor for treatment, one should rely on a Kalyanamitra [Kalyanamitra, spiritual friend] without negligence.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
