Verses composed to dispel misconceptions about the scriptures. Homage to the Lord of Speech! When the sun of the teachings of Jambudvipa (referring to the world we live in) ascends the central chariot seat in the sky of Gobadhanya (one of the four continents), it is like a treasure trove of accumulated wisdom, like the spreading one with the mark of a deer (referring to the moon), rising in the central sky of the east. Thereafter, the garden of the teachings of Jambudvipa, like a new sun opened with gold, the hundred-petaled lotus of the past teachings, the bee of the night desiring to behold, with the fierce crest jewel of evil thoughts, now enjoys happily on the extremely blooming garland of blue lotuses. Thereafter, that very nature of it, the sunlight of discriminating wisdom that darkens, with the chariot of scriptures and reason, this has arisen. Some say that by the footsteps of Nagarjuna, explained by Madhyamaka reasoning, all phenomena are dependent arising, and whatever is dependent arising must exist, therefore it can completely eliminate nihilism, and whatever is dependent arising is emptiness, therefore it can be liberated from eternalism. Such is not the view of Madhyamaka, as the scriptures say: The meaning of dependent arising is relative existence, and if it is said that the meaning of relative existence is not established, because if it exists, it has an edge, and having an edge cannot be dependent arising, dependent arising itself is free from edges. Dependent arising is liberated from the four extremes, if dependent arising exists, it contradicts existence or non-existence, any of the four extremes such as existence and non-existence cannot be dependent arising. If relative existence must be established, then east is always east, and west is always west, because each is established in relation to the other. East becomes west, and west also becomes east, because each is established in relation to the other. Now, by the wishes of people, whatever is established as east and west, that is not established, because it needs to rely on other knowables. Just like the far shore and this shore, long and short, left and right, etc., should also be examined and understood with the previous reasoning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the east is not established in the east, then things like vases will not be established individually either. If so, do you think that what is established is not existence? If you admit that anything is dependent arising, then what is so strange about saying that this or that does not exist? Whatever is dependent arising is said to be emptiness. When interacting with worldly people, one does not tell them that all phenomena are established dependently, regarding the phenomena known to worldly people. Because one speaks in accordance with them, they will have faith and thus enter one's own doctrine. After they enter the doctrine, they will be told that all phenomena are free from elaboration, thus liberating them from the extremes of elaboration. Furthermore, those who follow the scholars believe that existent things pervade freedom from elaboration, and freedom from elaboration also pervades existence. They believe that the meaning of emptiness is to acknowledge that all phenomena exist, but are empty of other non-existent things, and they consider this to be the meaning of dependent arising. These views are inconsistent with the scriptures, cannot be established by reasoning, and contradict the views of the ancient sages of the Land of Snows (Tibet). The above is a poetic composition that clarifies misunderstandings about the Dharma; this is the first chapter on analyzing the meaning of dependent arising and emptiness. This is the second chapter on refuting the wrong views on emptiness of Tokme (Asanga). I prostrate to the Bhagavan, the Lord of Speech (Goddess Saraswati, Sanskrit: Vāgīśvarī, Vagishvari, the master of language), and now contemplate what the meaning of dependent arising is, as it appears in the treatises of Tokme (Asanga). What is dependent arising? It is not established dependently as some treatises say. Rather, it explains what 'conditioned phenomena' are, based on the reason of being born from causes and conditions. All conditioned phenomena are empty of inherent existence, which Dharmakirti explains with reasoning in the Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition). In the Pramāṇaviniścaya (Ascertainment of Valid Cognition), it is explained that things are pervaded by impermanence. For things that are unconditioned, it is explained as permanent in the Abhisamayalankara (Ornament of Clear Realization). Conventional truth is empty in its own nature, thus liberated from the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Although it is necessary to eliminate the clinging to existence and non-existence, etc., in ultimate truth, it is not necessary to eliminate the permanence and true establishment of ultimate truth. What is the truth of ultimate truth? Although it is liberated from the elaborations of the four extremes, it is not necessary to eliminate what is established by valid cognition. Because there is no clinging, liberation from extremes is established. What is born from conditions is unborn, because there is no birth for it. It is said to be empty because it depends on conditions. This is how the essence of this sutra is explained. Because this school acknowledges true establishment, the great Tsongkhapa and his followers unanimously say that it is impossible to abandon the clinging to truth. For you, because things like vases exist, it is impossible to abandon the conceptual thought of existence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
