Collection of Instructions by the Great Scholar Sakya Chokden skc22 'Establishing the Three Vows Through Questions and Answers' 6-5-1a Establishing the Three Vows Through Questions and Answers Oh, later generations! 6-5-1b The essence of the teachings, the three vows, after speaking well of the teachings as they are, may the master of the teachings who acts upon the teachings be victorious! Like young people wandering for a long time in the desolate wilderness of spring, if they are attached to the water source for ripening, they will work hard themselves. Young people who follow the scholars who have been greatly modified by the unwise, tired of being wrongly spoken of, how can they drink the nectar of the water source? When a scholar comes into the world, if there is no way of teaching, debating, and writing, who will regard whom as a scholar? Therefore, listen without jealousy. Here, oh, later generations! The mind that abandons harming others, along with its basis, is a powerful and continuous mind, which is the definition of the Pratimoksha vow; The mind that accomplishes benefiting others, along with its basis, is a powerful and continuous mind, which is the definition of the Bodhisattva vow; The discipline that is blessed by the deities and wisdom beings and practiced accordingly is the definition of the Mantra vow. 6-5-2a Moreover, the Pratimoksha vow is not abandoned by death, and the Bhikshu who has successively taken the three vows, the Bhikshu vow in his continuum is also the Bodhisattva and Mantra vows in his continuum, because the latter abides in the former. To explain it in this way is said to be the intention of Jetsun Sakya Pandita, I have heard this said. This is to slander the great being, because one identifies a meaning that contradicts the Sutras and Tantras and explains it as his intention. In this case, the definition is not valid, and the existence of a common basis is not valid. First, the definitions of the Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Secret Mantra vows are not valid. The definition of the Pratimoksha vow is not valid. First, then, according to which view should the definition of the Pratimoksha vow be examined: the Vinaya, the Abhidharma, the Sutra, or the Secret Mantra? If according to the former, then it is not necessarily the vow of the mind that abandons harming others, it is not necessarily a Shramanera or Shramanerika, it may also be a non-human being, and in the continuum of those whose northern voice is unpleasant, the mind that abandons harming others along with its basis... 6-5-2b arising mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Others are uncertain. Firstly, the first view cannot be accepted, because the basis of Pratimoksha vows (so thar sdom pa, vows of individual liberation) and mental vows (yid kyi sdom pa, vows of mind) cannot be consistent. If someone thinks that the 'dharma' (chos can, the subject of the argument) is not established, then it contradicts what is said in the Pratimoksha Sutra (so thar gyi mdo): 'Mental vows are good.' If someone thinks that mental vows are the same as Pratimoksha vows, then it contradicts what is said in the 'Radiant Sutra' ('od ldan): 'There are no mental vows in Pratimoksha vows.' If the second view is accepted, then this 'dharma' is not a vow, because it is not an intermediate state. If someone thinks that the root is not established, then it contradicts what is said in the Pratimoksha Sutra: 'A renunciate harming others and violating others is not a practitioner.' If the third view is accepted, then it contradicts what is said in the root Sutra (mdo rtsa ba): 'Non-humans and places with unpleasant sounds are not places for holding vows,' the fundamental reason is established, because there are such situations. The reason why there are such situations is that there are noble ones in that basis. Furthermore, the basis of this life has committed actions such as killing, etc., which are downfall offenses, and the basis of the next life ultimately achieves such precepts, this 'dharma', your basis of the next life will produce the root downfall of killing, what is this 'dharma'? Because the Pratimoksha vows you have taken will follow you even after death. Furthermore, the vows of a Bhikshuni and the vows of Brahmacharya Upavasatha (tshangs spyod nyer gnas kyi sdom pa), this 'dharma', will become an example of that definition, because it is the object of that definition. If this view is accepted, then it will become the vow to abstain from killing and not taking what is not given, because it is the object of that definition. If this view is accepted, then this 'dharma' will become any of the three: the vows of a Upasaka, a Shramanera, or a Bhikshu. This is impossible to accept, because it is both this and that. According to the second view, the seven abstentions of body and speech contained in the nature of the Samadhi vows (bsam gtan sdom pa), and the seven abstentions contained in the nature of the Anāsrava vows (zag med sdom pa), have too broad a scope, while the current mental states contained in the nature of the Pratimoksha vows have too narrow a scope. Specifically, in the first case, this 'dharma' is not a Pratimoksha vow, because it is not included in the desire realm, but is included in the form realm. In the second case, this 'dharma' is not a Pratimoksha vow, because it is not contaminated, but is uncontaminated, and is not obtained through proper attention, but is naturally achieved. These are categories of reasons. Both of these 'dharmas', the fundamental reason is established, because any vow is the mental factor—intention—that abandons the seven non-virtuous actions of body and speech. The second case is that the current mental state contained in its nature is the current mental state of practicing the seven non-virtuous actions of body and speech. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
