As stated in treatises such as the *Śataśāstra* (Hundred Verses) and the *Ratnāvalī* (Precious Garland), this is the tenet of the Madhyamaka school (Middle Way School). Although the Realists also say that, in terms of ultimate truth, 'neither existent' nor 'non-existent,' if it is not explained as a combination of contradictions, why mention it in this non-elaborate system? If one accepts all worldly conventions, one cannot defeat all the opponents, because these conventions are harmed by valid cognition. Nāgārjuna's system is like a garden of lotuses, illuminated by the white light of Candrakīrti's well-spoken words; seeing it, one obtains rest. If one analyzes this meaning in detail, one might think that the views of the great predecessors have fallen into the fault of nihilism, therefore, after much thought and analysis. In Candrakīrti's treatise, in order to prevent the collection of elaborations, the word 'svabhāva' (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性) must be added to all negating statements, in order to clarify what is to be negated. Therefore, all dharmas (phenomena) from form up to omniscient wisdom are established by valid cognition, but these dharmas are not truly established, which eliminates the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Regarding this view, there are many faults; the following will enumerate the faults of this way of establishing it: It loses the meaning of the two truths, fails to recognize svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), becomes a destroyer of emptiness, allows conventional truths to be analyzed by reason, falls into the extremes of eternalism and nihilism, and causes the wisdom of the fully enlightened Buddha to become confused. If a pot and so on are not truly existent, then it loses the meaning of conventional truth, because conventional truth is established according to worldly consensus. If a pot and so on exist, then it loses the way of establishing ultimate truth, because a pot and so on cannot be found when sought, so it is established as ultimate truth. Therefore, a pot and so on never existed from the beginning, but appears to a deluded mind; this is called the union of the two truths. Although a barren woman's son and a pot and so on are the same in being non-existent, whether or not they are established as conventional truth depends on the subject's conventional mind. Calling a truly established pot and so on 'svabhāva' (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性) is a mistake, because they cannot be the nature of either of the two truths. The pot and so on themselves are the nature of the conventional truth of the pot and so on, and that itself is empty of svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), which is the nature of the ultimate truth. The first case is when establishing conventional truth, and the second case is when explaining ultimate truth. In order to negate the first svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), therefore, the emptiness of inner and outer phenomena, etc., are spoken of. In order to negate the second svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), therefore, the emptiness of svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), etc., are explained. The first case is when negating the self, and the second case is when reversing all elaborations. For these two kinds of svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), in order to show that they are not svabhāva (藏文:རང་བཞིན།,梵文天城体:स्वभाव,梵文罗马拟音:svabhāva,汉语字面意思:自性), the reasoning of dependent origination is applied. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because there is nothing that is not dependent arising. If a thing is established by valid cognition, And a thing to be refuted is not established by valid cognition, Then this refutation is not suitable for the Rangtong view, Because autonomous things are established by valid cognition, And the imputed (Kun tag) is not established by valid cognition, Then this refutation is the supreme way of establishing the ultimate truth (GZhan stong). Emptiness (stong nyid) will also become the cause of destruction of things, For example, a vase, etc., Exists and when searched with reason, Because it is not established by valid cognition. Conventional truth (tha snyad bden pa) will become something that is established, After being analyzed by reason, In conventional truth, a vase, etc., Exists but is not truly established. The master Chandrakirti believes that, What is observed by the clinging to reality (bden 'dzin) imputed, The conventional of worldly customs, And the worldly observed by the innate (lhan skyes), The establishment of the ultimate truth, Both of these are of the Madhyamaka (dBu ma), The establishment of conventional truth, He clearly thinks so. When cutting off elaboration (spros pa) with view (lta ba), If one admits that there is an existing dharma (chos), If it can be found by searching with reason, Then it cannot transcend the eternalist view (rtag par lta), If it cannot be found by searching, Then it will become a nihilistic view (chad par lta), Because saying that it existed before but does not exist now, This is exactly the view of nihilism. The wisdom (ye shes) of the perfect Buddha (rdzogs sangs rgyas) also, Will not always be in a state of equipoise (mnyam gzhag), Because various dependent arising (rten 'brel) phenomena, Appear clearly. When Chandrakirti explains how the wisdom of the perfect Buddha, Knows the knowable (shes bya), he says, Without touching the conditioned (byas pa can), Only knowing the nature (rang bzhin). May this well-spoken statement, which is so certain, Increase the pure virtuous deeds that are born, Increase the ocean of well-spoken words, Fulfill the wishes of Chandrakirti! This, which is called 'Praise of Dependent Arising', The faulty part of it is, The meaning of dependent arising is with valid cognition, To explain the established things. Although this seems to help eliminate the extreme of nihilism (chad mtha'), Most of the treatises of Nagarjuna and his disciples, Have been led to the wrong, Road, so they have not reached, The ocean of ultimate meaning. May we happily proceed on the path of keeping Chandrakirti's commentary, In its original meaning! This is not done out of hatred for the views of others, But to guide oneself and other beings who are connected to oneself, Away from the path of clinging to extremes. In explaining this in detail, Even if one destroys the arguments of others, And all external debaters, There will be no fault. May the teacher and the teachings, Become unparalleled by proclaiming that emptiness, dependent arising, and, The Middle Way are the same in meaning! 《Praise of Dependent Arising》ends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
