Biographies of Great Masters NT23: The Biography of Lama Kyer Gang Pa 2-923 ༄༅། །The Biography of Lama Kyer Gang Pa. The Biography of the Accomplished Kyerpa Gangpa. The Biography of Lama Kyer Gang Pa. I prostrate to Lama Nyamme Rinchen (blA ma mnyam med rin chen, the Incomparable Jewel Lama) and the feet of Realized Zhang Gom (rtogs ldan zhang sgom zhabs la 'dud). The embodiment of boundless compassion that protects beings, may Avalokiteśvara bestow blessings (spyan ras gzigs kyis byin gyis brlabs). Initially, I entered the Dharma through faith, in the middle, I practiced the Great Compassion, and then I relied on Lama Sangye (bla ma sangs rgyas, Buddha Lama), now the fruit has manifested. My homeland is Nangong Namsa, and my clan is Ebal ('bal). First, from the age of twelve, I practiced the Yamaraja (gShin rje gShed) ritual. At seventeen, I took ordination at Kyer Gang (skyer sgang) with my uncle Ebal Omniscient ('bal thams cad mkhyen pa can), and received the Five Treatises of Maitreya (byams pa'i chos lnga), the Bodhicaryāvatāra (spyod 'jug), the Compendium of Trainings (bslabs btus), and the Stages of the Path (bstan rim). Later, when Ebal Logician ('bal tshad ma ba) was invited to Lhasa to turn the wheel of Dharma, I went as an attendant. A monk prepared an offering, offering three yellow silk cloths, a copper vessel, and a portion of flour and butter. He went to Brak Lha (brag lha) to perform the 'Droton' ritual and expel evil spirits. In a small room called Lo Phuk (blo phug), I saw someone scattering white soil. Just seeing that scene, my mind changed. I asked, 'Who is living in that small room?' The exorcists of the four districts of Lhasa said, 'There is a holy man named Phagpa Gyer Gom ('phags pa gcer sgom), an accomplished practitioner of Great Compassion.' 2-924 I developed devotion to that holy man and went to see him with silk cloths, a copper vessel, flour, and butter. I asked the Lama, 'Have you seen the face of the Great Compassionate One (thugs rje chen po)?' The Lama replied, 'Whether it is the Great Compassionate One or not, I don't know, but there is always a shadow (grib kyi thad ka) coming from over there.' I said, 'Then please grant me the Great Compassion practice.' The Lama said, 'First, you must receive the empowerment of commitment (rig gtad gyi dbang).' So I made lamps with two 'khal' of butter, made 'Tsa Tu' (btsA tu) offerings with two 'khal' of butter, offered three silk cloths and a copper vessel, and requested the practice ritual three times. I asked the Lama, 'How many years did you practice before you saw the deity?' The Lama said, 'Every autumn, I did some virtuous deeds and then went into retreat. After about eight years, one day I felt feverish and wanted to go out to bask in the sun. In the cave where I was staying, there was a sound of 'Kudi Riri.' I wondered who it was and went over. As a result, I saw the main deity and the retinue of three deities reciting the Mani (ma Ni) mantra and making the sound 'Diriri.' I offered the seven-branch prayer once. Since then, I have always been able to see the deity and have never been separated.' After that, I went to Kyer Gang (skyer sgang), and now... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Either dedicate oneself to death or to seeing Avalokiteśvara. 2-925 Having obtained a human body once, one must either dedicate oneself to death or to seeing the face of the Great Compassionate Avalokiteśvara. One must not waste one's life meaninglessly; one must practice. At that time, in the hermitage, the Khampa monks, holding horse reins, wearing robes, and raising flags, said: 'If you do not study when you are young, the lineage of འབལ་ཚད་མ་བ་ (phonetic transcription, uncertain meaning) will be cut off; you must become an expert in the four difficulties.' I did not listen, and the monks decided after discussion: do not send flour, water, or firewood to the hermit. Everyone coming and going should throw stones at the door. If this is done, he will become annoyed and start studying.' So they made a rule. After that, I strictly secluded myself and practiced the Great Compassionate Avalokiteśvara. All the monks coming and going threw stones, saying: 'Do not slip and slide like butter in the four difficulties; you cannot even recite 'Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ' (藏文:མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:मणि पद्मे हूँ,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Jewel in the lotus). They did not send even a single ration. After that, I barely had a bowl of thin porridge each day, sometimes drinking it, sometimes not. When I didn't drink it, I mixed ashes and water and drank it. Sleep was dull, 2-926 Dullness is affliction. I thought: it was because of these afflictions that I wandered in samsara before, so I recited 'Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ' (藏文:མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:मणि पद्मे हूँ,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Jewel in the lotus) day and night without sleeping, causing the winds to rise and my head to ache as if it were about to burst, so I tied my head with a belt. I recited for two years, but there were no signs, so I performed a grand fire puja. Although signs of the purification of sins appeared, I still did not see Avalokiteśvara. After three and a half years, one day at noon, I felt tired and went to a rock top to relax. I saw a brilliant rainbow in the sky and thought: I have not even had a bowl of thin porridge for three and a half years, and I have been reciting intensely, causing the winds to rise, and I am afraid I will fall off the cliff. So I approached the cave in the rock, and in the center of the rainbow in the sky in front of me, Avalokiteśvara, the main deity, and the two attendant bodhisattvas were sitting smiling. I said to Avalokiteśvara: 'Pitiful Avalokiteśvara, I have not even had a bowl of thin porridge for three and a half years, why did you not appear sooner?' Avalokiteśvara said: 'I have not left you for even a moment since you practiced for three days, but it was because your bad karma had not been exhausted, and your hope of seeing me hindered you.' 2-927 At that time, the immeasurable, completely pure body of compassion, like a snow mountain of pure nature, was without flaws. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
