Biographies of Great Masters NT6: The Biography of Redawa Shonnu Lodro 1-289 The Biography of Redawa Shonnu Lodro Namo Guruve! Avalokiteshvara, the treasure of impartial love, Manjushri, the lord of immaculate wisdom, Redawa, the crown jewel of Tibetan scholars, I prostrate at the feet of Shonnu Lodro. The wondrous deeds performed by you, O noble one, Just as they are described in your own words, I shall relate them briefly, without exaggeration or diminution. May those fortunate ones listen with pure minds. Here is the summary: The manner of taking birth based on lineage, The liberation of youth, The immaculate conduct of virtuous practice, The view and conduct praised by the holy ones, The manner of reverently attending to the holy being, How the intention of the Thubpa (Buddha) was sought, How the profound essence of the correct view was found, The explanation of self-satisfaction and others' interpretations, The manner of spreading the teachings and cultivating students, The core of the heart's commitment, The manner of offering vows to the higher deities, The manner of thoroughly immersing the mind in solitary places, The manner of gaining fearlessness of birth and death, And other excellent deeds performed, The manner of departing to other realms for the sake of those to be tamed, The manner of leaving behind objects of faith for those with devotion. These are the external summaries of the deeds performed by you, O Protector. 1-290 The manner of taking birth: In a place where the Buddha's teachings flourished, At the foot of the glorious Sakya mountain, the seat of the successive emanations of the Protector Manjushri, In a place called Reda, He was born as the son of a great minister of Redawa, who was of the same lineage as the Tibetan King Trisong Detsen. The auspicious signs at the time of conception and birth were similar to those that occurred for the goddess Mayadevi, but they are not written in detail due to their abundance. The biography of his youth: At the age of ten, he already possessed excellent samadhi. His mother sent him to tend the cows, but one day the cows returned without him. When she went to look for him, she found him meditating near the cowshed. It was similar to how the young Siddhartha went to the fields and, feeling weary, sat in the shade of a tree and attained the four dhyanas. Then, when he was asked to marry, he said, 'Householders are like being stuck in mud,' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, the life of a householder is like cooking food, while the life of a renunciate is like being dry and staying in a cool room. They understand the faults and merits of both householders and renunciates. Because there is no opportunity to practice the Dharma purely without the basis of renunciation, he did not take a Brahmin woman as a wife. 1-291 At that time, his parents passed away, and he abandoned the political affairs of his homeland. After renouncing, he served an Ani (nun) in Sakya and studied practice. This holy man, like a brave prince, possessed immeasurable intelligence. One day, he went to see the Ani and said, 'I must either go up and become a great official, governing politics with Dharma, or study the Tripitaka and spread the Buddha's teachings.' The Ani said, 'You cannot do that. You are happy, and I also benefit. Study practice.' But he did not listen. At the age of eighteen, he prostrated at the feet of Nyawon (uncle) and studied the treatises of reasoning. At the age of twenty-three, he composed works such as 'The Debate on the Existence of Self' and 'The Debate on the Object and Function of Pramana (Valid Cognition),' becoming as famous as the Second Dharmakirti. The Immaculate Way of Relying on the Practice of a Mendicant. The following is a teaching on how to demonstrate the immaculate conduct of a mendicant. In your advice on the conduct of a mendicant, you said: 'Those mendicants who, having heard the Dharma and the Vinaya (discipline), renounce but are not good at guarding the precepts, and act in an improper manner contrary to the Buddha's teachings, are thieves of the Buddhist teachings.' 1-292 'Speaking crookedly, yet thinking others are foolish; speech that is not dignified is not the proper conduct of a mendicant. Abandoning the deceitful mind and behavior, I always adhere to speaking frankly.' 'Speaking without restraint, yet thinking others are brave; not restraining speech is not the proper conduct of a mendicant. Abandoning nonsensical talk and mad behavior, I always adhere to peaceful behavior.' 'Adorning the exterior, yet thinking others are dignified; behavior that is deceitful is not the proper conduct of a mendicant. Abandoning the cunning behavior of seducing others, I always adhere to honest behavior.' 'Being self-righteous, yet thinking others are upright; not restraining the senses is not the proper conduct of a mendicant. Abandoning rude and careless behavior, I always adhere to careful behavior.' 'Doing many things, yet thinking others are capable; desiring distraction is not the proper conduct of a mendicant. Abandoning association with worldly affairs, I always adhere to a life of few activities.' 'Enjoying wealth, yet thinking others are glorious;' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
