Collection of Instructions by Salopa SL14 A Concise Guru Yoga and Offering Ritual 1-390 A Concise Guru Yoga and Offering Ritual In Sanskrit: Śrīvajrayānayogānuttaraṃsyāmargamūlabajraācāryaguroyogaadhiṣṭhānonāma. English Translation: Named 'The Source of Blessings, Guru Yoga of the Vajra Master, Root of the Path of the Supreme Yoga of the Glorious Vajrayana'. I prostrate to the Lord of Speech, inseparable from the Guru. Glorious, possessing the all-seeing wisdom, a mountain of lapis lazuli, with a swirling garland of dark blue hair. The moonbeams of his compassion and the rays of the jewel on his crown dispel the darkness in the hearts of the three realms. The white light of his loving-kindness and compassion, emanating from his wise countenance, greatly expands the all-illuminating light of wisdom. May Mañjuśrī, inseparable from the supreme deity, the Lord of the Wheel, open the lotus of my intellect. Herein lies the essence of all the pure sutras and tantras, the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddhas; the key to the path of the pāramitā and secret mantra vajrayāna; the single seed that dispels obstacles and generates all qualities; the heart essence of all the holy and virtuous gurus; the quintessence of various profound instructions gathered into one; the swift and uncommon path of the vajrayāna: the method for practicing the profound guru yoga. 1-391 In general, it is taught in all sutras, tantras, and mantras that one progresses on the path by relying on the guru. However, to attain enlightenment in one lifetime, one must, from among the four classes of secret mantra tantras, rely on a qualified vajra master who is capable of performing the mandala of highest yoga tantra, and who has received the four complete empowerments as spoken by the Buddhas. Only through such a guru can one swiftly achieve the fruit of vajradhara. Therefore, one should first clean one's dwelling and arrange it pleasingly. Then, on a high seat adorned with silks and the like, place images of the guru and other sacred objects. In front of these, arrange offerings such as flowers, incense, lamps, scented water, and food, according to one's means. Facing the sacred objects, sit on a comfortable cushion in the vajra posture, and contemplate thus: The three realms --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No matter where one is born within the six realms, in the three lower realms, one is afflicted and weakened by unbearable sufferings such as heat and cold, hunger and thirst, and idiocy. Even in the three higher realms, gods experience death and transference, demigods experience fighting, and humans experience birth, aging, sickness, and death, as well as the suffering of not finding what one desires and encountering what one does not desire. Those of lower status experience physical suffering, while those of higher status experience mental suffering, and so on, beyond enumeration, with constant change and the suffering of conditioned existence being inconceivable. To be liberated from these sufferings, there is no other means than the sacred Dharma, and to obtain that, one must obtain a human body with leisure and endowments. Moreover, to obtain a human body, one must uphold pure moral conduct, which is as difficult to find as a turtle's neck fitting into the hole of a yoke. Even if one obtains a human body, one cannot escape death at the end of life. The causes of death are many, and the causes of life are few. The lifespan in Jambudvipa is uncertain, and one does not know when one will die. When death falls upon oneself, no wealth, mantra, or auspicious connection can avert it. Therefore, before that happens, one should practice Dharma, first abandoning suffering and striving to do good as much as possible, and transforming non-virtue into virtue, which should be the main focus of practice. These beings who are enemies, friends, or neutral are not unrelated to us. In previous lives, they were all kind parents who benefited us and protected us from harm. May all these beings engage in happiness and the cause of happiness, which is virtue, and be separated from suffering and the cause of suffering, which is non-virtue. Only the Buddha can do this, and in order to achieve Buddhahood, one should practice such a path. To protect all sentient beings from suffering, take refuge in the Lama and the Three Jewels, thinking, 'I and my parents, the six kinds of beings, take refuge.' In the actual practice of Lama Yoga, there are preliminaries, the main practice, and concluding practices. The first is taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta, with the aforementioned thought, reciting aloud: 'I and all sentient beings equal to the extent of space in the three realms, from this time until the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the glorious and precious Lama. I take refuge in the Bhagavan, the perfectly enlightened Buddha. I take refuge in the sacred Dharma. I take refuge in the noble Sangha.' Recite seven times. For the benefit of all sentient beings, I will attain the state of perfect enlightenment. For that purpose, I will practice the profound path of Lama Yoga.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
