They understand this in accordance with their own school, whether with or without form. Therefore, for Buddhists, there is no basis for argument. If one wishes to argue, the focus of the argument should only be on the nature of mind and mental factors, and the reality of things themselves. Those who hold views higher than Madhyamaka believe that ultimate truth is free from elaboration, and that conventional truth is merely illusion. These two views cannot both apply to the Buddha, because it is impossible for two contradictory attributes to exist simultaneously in the essence of things. The distinction between ultimate truth and conventional truth is based on two different modes of cognition. If both modes of cognition are considered true, then the reality of things is undermined. If both are untrue, then the reality of things is also undermined. If one is true and the other is not, then it can be temporarily assumed that the one that is true is the reality of things. For example, someone with jaundice sees a conch shell as yellow, someone with glaucoma sees it as blue, someone with signs of death sees its shape distorted, and someone with cataracts sees it as two. But those with healthy eyes see the conch shell as white, with its shape intact, and as one in number. For all these cases, it is merely the appearance to their respective cognitive objects, and there is no error in that. However, it cannot be asserted that all these different appearances are the essential attributes of the conch shell, because if all appearances were true, then the reality of the conch shell would be undermined. If all appearances were false, then the reality of the conch shell would also be undermined. If the appearance seen by those with healthy eyes corresponds to the thing itself and is truly existent, while other appearances are not, then only the non-inverted appearance is the reality of the conch shell. Similarly, the two truths cannot both be the reality of things, and the Buddha cannot have inverted cognition. Whatever is designated as conventional truth cannot be proven to be truly existent, because it belongs to the realm of illusion." } ] ============================================================

There is no place where things do not gather. Generally, the two, error and non-error, are established interdependently. Therefore, relative to those that are very mistaken, there are occasions when it is permissible to consider something as not mistaken. But ultimately, one must designate as truth that in which no fault has been found. Therefore, the way in which the two truths are inseparable, and the way in which they are considered as two truths, both refer to that which is the completely pure realm of phenomena itself, which must be understood as the essence of the Tathagata, the nature of all dharmas. If that reason is explained and shown in detail, some say this: "How does the Buddha know that the realm of phenomena is merely completely pure?" To this, it should be said: "How does one know that there is the array of body and wisdom?" Although it is not explicitly stated that it is established by direct perception, the blessing of compassion arises, which is established for both. If one says that it is because the result is seen, then although the existence of the cause is established through the result, it is not established that the cause of the basis is inevitably necessary. If someone also says this: "Because the nature of knowable things possesses the nature of the two truths, it is impossible to separate from the nature of the two truths even in the state of Buddhahood, which is established by the reason of self-nature," then that which was shown above is itself the reason of self-nature. This reason establishes our doctrine. Thus, in treatises on reasoning, the definition of a general reason is shown, and that its part is encompassed by pervasion, and because it does not arise without pervasion, pervasion is established. Therefore, all reasons are encompassed by the reason of self-nature. Thus, if it is certain that self-nature cannot exist in another way, then it is not defeated by the fault of reason. That is, if something exists, it is impossible for something not to exist; if something does not exist, it is impossible for something to exist; if something exists, it is impossible for something to exist; if something does not exist, it is impossible for something not to exist. These four ways of the nature of things summarize all reasoning. Thus, in treatises on sound and valid cognition, and likewise in all treatises on knowledge, in sutras, tantras, agamas, and pith instructions, all the reasons that are established
